This envelope template set gives you five real envelope sizes, drawn at true scale with solid cut lines, dashed fold lines and shaded glue flaps: A2 and A6 for cards and photos, No. 6 3/4 for checks and cash gifts, and the ISO sizes C6 and C7. Each PDF prints on US Letter or A4 and has a second page with a matching liner. It is for anyone making cards, invitations or a gift envelope at home, and for classrooms that want a measured paper-folding project. Each envelope template prints on standard paper.

Quick answer: Print the envelope template at 100% (Actual size), check that the scale bar measures 1 inch and 2.5 cm, cut on the solid line, fold in the side flaps, glue the shaded edges of the bottom flap and fold it up, then insert the card and seal the top flap. An A2 envelope is 4 3/8 × 5 3/4 in and holds a Letter sheet folded in quarters.

Click a picture to open the Letter PDF, or use the A4 button. Page 1 is the envelope and page 2 is the liner for the same size. Every template also prints its finished size on the middle panel, which becomes the inside of the envelope, so the label never shows. Prefer one file? Envelope size chart: what fits in each envelope?

An envelope has to be a little bigger than what goes in it. The table gives each template’s finished size, what it is made for according to the standard envelope tables on Wikipedia’s envelope page, and how much room a common card leaves, worked out from the measurements.

Envelope Finished size What fits inside US letter-size mail?
A2 4 3/8 × 5 3/4 in
111 × 146 mm
US Letter folded in quarters, 4 1/4 × 5 1/2 in (1/4 in by 1/8 in spare)
3 1/2 × 5 in card or photo (3/4 in by 7/8 in spare)
Yes, ratio 1.31
A6 4 3/4 × 6 1/2 in
121 × 165 mm
4 × 6 in photo or postcard (1/2 in by 3/4 in spare)
US Letter folded in quarters (1 in by 1/2 in spare)

No. 6 3/4 3 5/8 × 6 1/2 in
92 × 165 mm

A6 card or paper, 105 × 148 mm (A4 folded in quarters) (9/16 in by 3/8 in spare)
4 × 6 in photo (3/8 in by 1/2 in spare)
Yes, ratio 1.42
C7 3 3/16 × 4 1/2 in

Gift card or business card
No: smaller than 3 1/2 × 5 in

A2 envelopes and quarter-fold Letter cards are a classic pairing: fold an 8 1/2 × 11 in sheet in half and in half again and you get a 4 1/4 × 5 1/2 in card, which leaves 1/4 in of spare room in the 5 3/4 in width. In ISO countries the same job is done by C6, which takes an A6 card or a sheet of A4 folded twice.

Why is there no No. 10 or DL template?

A No. 10 business envelope does not fit on one Letter or A4 sheet once you add flaps, so it is left out rather than shrunk. The back of any folded envelope needs flaps that together cover its full height plus an overlap, so the flat template is at least twice the envelope’s height plus about 1/2 in, and its width plus two side flaps. Allowing 0.3 in of paper around the cut line for the printer, these four popular sizes are too big:

Envelope Finished size Holds Smallest flat template
No. 10 (business) 4 1/8 × 9 1/2 in
105 × 241 mm
US Letter folded in thirds 10 1/2 × 8 3/4 in
DL 4 1/3 × 8 2/3 in
110 × 220 mm
A4 folded in thirds 9 11/16 × 9 3/16 in
A7 5 1/4 × 7 1/4 in
133 × 184 mm
a 5 × 7 in card (measured) 8 1/4 × 11 in
C5 6 3/8 × 9 in
162 × 229 mm
A5, or A4 folded once 10 × 13 1/4 in

Letter paper is 8 1/2 × 11 in and A4 is 210 × 297 mm (Letter paper size, Wikipedia, ISO 216, Wikipedia), so after margins neither has room for these. A No. 10 template fits on 11 × 17 in (Tabloid) or A3 paper; otherwise buy those envelopes, or fold your letter to fit one of the sizes above.

How to make an envelope from a printable envelope template

You need scissors, a glue stick or double-sided tape, and a ruler for crisp folds.

Envelope template: How to fold an envelope from the template in four steps: cut out, fold in the side flaps, glue and fold up the bottom flap, add the card and seal the top flap
  1. Print at actual size. In the print dialog choose 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page. Use plain paper first to test, then your good paper.
  2. Check the scale. Measure the black bars on the middle panel: one should be exactly 1 inch and the other 2.5 cm.
  3. Cut on the solid line. The dashed lines stay inside the envelope; never cut them.
  4. Score the folds. Run a ruler and the back of a butter knife or an empty ballpoint pen along each dashed line. Scoring matters most on thick paper.
  5. Fold the two side flaps in over the printed middle panel.
  6. Glue the bottom flap. Put glue only on the two shaded strips, fold the bottom flap up and press it onto the side flaps. Leave it to dry for a minute.
  7. Fill and seal. Slide in the card, fold the top flap down and close it with a glue stick, tape or a sticker. The plain front is where the address goes.

How do you know the template printed at the right size?

The template is the right size when the scale bars measure exactly 1 inch and 2.5 cm with a ruler. Every page has both bars, drawn the same length as on a ruler, and the finished width and height are marked with red arrows on the middle panel. If a bar measures short, your printer scaled the page down, usually because Fit to page or Shrink oversized pages was switched on. Before publishing, each PDF was measured by software: the cut outline, the fold lines and both scale bars match the intended sizes to within 0.01 in on both Letter and A4.

For example, in the A2 Letter PDF the fold lines measure 5 3/4 × 4 3/8 in, the finished size of an A2 envelope, and the whole cut-out measures 7 × 9 1/4 in.

Envelope liner template

An envelope liner is a decorated paper insert that lines the top flap and the inside back. Page 2 of every PDF is a liner cut to fit that envelope, with a star and dot pattern to color. It is 1/8 in smaller than the top flap on its slanted edges, and its lower part is narrower than the envelope so it slides between the side flaps. For a fancy finish, cut the liner out, trace it onto wrapping paper, scrapbook paper or an old map, and use that instead. Match the liner to the envelope template you printed, so it fits inside neatly.

  1. Assemble the envelope first.
  2. Slide the liner in, pattern side out, with its point inside the top flap.
  3. Glue the lower part of the liner to the inside back of the envelope.
  4. Put a little glue under the liner’s point and fold the flap and liner down together along the fold line.

Can you mail a homemade envelope?

Yes, as long as it meets the postal rules for a letter. In the United States, a letter-size piece must be at least 5 in long and 3 1/2 in high, and no more than 11 1/2 in long, 6 1/8 in high and 1/4 in thick (USPS Domestic Mail Manual 101). A letter also counts as nonmachinable if its length divided by its height is under 1.3 or over 2.5, and nonmachinable pieces can cost extra. Here is how the templates compare: Before mailing, check the size of your envelope template against your postal service’s limits.

  • A2 (4 3/8 × 5 3/4 in): length to height ratio 1.31, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range
  • A6 (4 3/4 × 6 1/2 in): length to height ratio 1.37, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range
  • No. 6 3/4 (3 5/8 × 6 1/2 in): length to height ratio 1.79, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range
  • C6 (4 1/2 × 6 3/8 in): length to height ratio 1.42, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range
  • C7 (3 3/16 × 4 1/2 in): too small to mail as a US letter, since its 81 mm (3 3/16 in) height is under the 3 1/2 in minimum. Use it for gift cards and hand-delivered notes.

Seal every flap edge firmly before mailing, and outside the US check the rules of your own postal service.

Paper and glue tips

  • Plain printer paper works for every size and is the easiest to fold. It is thin enough that a dark card can show through, so add a liner if privacy matters.
  • Patterned paper: print the template on the back (plain side) of scrapbook or gift paper so the pattern ends up outside.
  • Card stock: score every fold first, and expect thick paper to make the envelope slightly snugger.
  • Glue: a glue stick dries flat and does not wrinkle thin paper; liquid glue can.
  • Kids: the C7 mini envelope is a good first project. Pair it with a paper craft for kids or a short note on lined paper.

Print the envelope template on patterned paper to make envelopes that match your cards. Use a glue stick on the envelope template flaps, because liquid glue can wrinkle thin paper.

Frequently asked questions

8 quick answers

What size envelope do I need for a 5 × 7 card?

An A7 envelope, 5 1/4 × 7 1/4 in. Its template does not fit on one Letter or A4 sheet with proper flaps, so it is not included here; buy A7 envelopes or print the template on larger paper.

What size is an A2 envelope?

An A2 envelope is 4 3/8 × 5 3/4 in (111 × 146 mm). It holds a Letter sheet folded in quarters, 4 1/4 × 5 1/2 in.

What fits in a C6 envelope?

A6 paper or cards (105 × 148 mm), which is the same as A4 folded in half twice.

Why does my envelope come out smaller than the size on the label?

The printer scaled the page. Print again at 100% or Actual size and check that the scale bar measures exactly 1 inch.

Can I print the envelope template on card stock?

Yes, if your printer takes it. Score each dashed line with a ruler before folding so the folds stay crisp.

Which envelope is best for a check or a cash gift?

The No. 6 3/4 envelope, 3 5/8 × 6 1/2 in, is the size made for personal checks and US banknotes.

Is there a No. 10 envelope template?

No. A No. 10 needs a flat template about 8 3/4 × 10 1/2 in, which does not fit on Letter or A4 with printer margins. Use 11 × 17 in or A3 paper.

Can I mail an envelope made from the A2 envelope template?

Yes, in the United States, as long as it meets the postal rules for a letter. The A2 size of 4 3/8 × 5 3/4 in has a length to height ratio of 1.31, inside the 1.3 to 2.5 range. Seal every flap edge firmly before mailing.
