How to play wedding guest bingo
- Give every guest a different card and a pen when she or he arrives.
- Explain the rule: find a guest who matches each square and write the name in it, one name per square.
- Guests mingle for 10 to 15 minutes, with the host and the emcee joining in.
- The first guest with a full line shouts bingo, and the host reads out the names.
- Each winner introduces one of the guests on her card to the room.
How many guests do you need for wedding guest bingo?
Because each name can be used only once on a card, the size of the group decides which card to print. This table shows how many different people a guest has to meet to fill a line or a whole card.
| Card | Names for a full card | Names for a line | Smallest group that can fill a card |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 by 3 | 8 (no free square) or 9 | 3 names | 9 people |
| 4 by 4 | 16 | 4 names | 17 people |
| 5 by 5 with free square | 24 | 5 names | 25 people |
A wedding usually has more than 100 guests, so the 5 by 5 card is easy to fill. For a small family function of 10 to 16 people, choose the 4 by 4 card.
Wedding icebreaker games for two families
Wedding icebreaker games are most useful in the first hour, when the two families are still sitting apart. Guest bingo sends people across the room to talk to each other, and the squares give them an instant topic. The bride’s uncle who “speaks Gujarati” and the groom’s aunt who “has been to 5 weddings this year” have an immediate conversation.
Wedding games for guests who do not know anyone
Wedding games for guests who do not know anyone should be easy to join. Bingo is perfect: all a shy guest has to do is ask a question from her card. Pair single guests with friendly hosts for the first few minutes, and add a few squares such as “came by train” that any guest can match.
Indian wedding games that mix both sides
Indian wedding games often pit the two sides against each other in fun. Guest bingo is a mixing game: a line can be completed only by talking to people from both sides. For a team game, play wedding tambola after the bingo. For the rituals of the day, see Wikipedia’s Hindu wedding article.
Find the guest bingo: adding your own squares
Find the guest bingo works best with a few squares from your own family. Add “Played antakshari with the groom” or “Went to the same college as the bride’s father”, and the game feels personal. See also wedding bingo for a game about moments.
