Minutes to Decimal Calculator: Convert Hours and Minutes to Decimal Hours

Convert hours and minutes to decimal hours, or decimal hours back to minutes, with a full minutes chart, rounding to 0.1 or 0.25 hour and a timesheet column converter.

A minutes to decimal calculator turns hours and minutes into decimal hours, the format payroll and billing systems expect. Type the hours and minutes, and the calculator divides the minutes by 60 and adds them to the hours, so 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 hours.

Quick answer: Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. For 7 hours 45 minutes, 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so the answer is 7.75. Seconds work the same way: divide by 3,600.

How to use the minutes to decimal calculator

  1. Enter the hours and the minutes. Seconds are optional, and minutes can be above 59, so 90 minutes is fine.
  2. Pick the number of decimal places and, if your employer rounds, a rounding rule such as the nearest quarter hour.
  3. Read the decimal hours, the exact value, the total minutes and the share of an hour. Add an hourly rate to see the pay.
  4. Use Decimal to minutes to go the other way, or the Timesheet column tab to convert a whole list at once.

How to convert minutes to decimal hours

An hour has 60 minutes and 3,600 seconds, as the definition of the hour states. To convert, divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. The method is the same for every case.

7 hours 45 minutes 7 + 45 ÷ 60 7.75 7.7500
8 hours 10 minutes 8 + 10 ÷ 60 8.17 8.1667

Hours and minutes to decimal: the mistake that costs money

The most common error is writing 7 hours 45 minutes as 7.45. The minutes part of a clock time is out of 60, and a decimal is out of 100, so 7:45 is 7.75 and not 7.45. At a pay rate of $18.50 the mistake is worth the difference between 7.75 and 7.45 hours.

Decimal hours to hours and minutes

Going back is just as simple. Take the whole number as the hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. For 7.75 hours, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. For 8.4 hours, 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 8 hours 24 minutes.

Rounding decimal hours to 0.1 or 0.25

Some employers round time to the nearest tenth of an hour (6 minutes) or quarter hour (15 minutes). The table shows how the same shift lengths come out under each rule. The calculator applies the rule you pick, so you can compare it with the exact value.

Time Exact Nearest 0.1 Nearest 0.25 Nearest 0.5
7:37 7.62 7.60 7.50 7.50
7:52 7.87 7.90 7.75 8.00
8:10 8.17 8.20 8.25 8.00
8:22 8.37 8.40 8.25 8.50
6:58 6.97 7.00 7.00 7.00

Rounding should average out over a pay period. If it always rounds in one direction, compare your exact total with the rounded one and ask payroll. Our time card calculator compares punch rounding rules for a whole week.

Adding a timesheet column in decimal hours

Convert each day first, then add the decimals, or add the hours and minutes and convert once. Both give the same total. For the five shifts 7:45, 8:10, 6:55, 7:37, 9:05 the total is 39:32, which is 39.53 decimal hours. Adding 7.75 + 8.17 + 6.92 + 7.62 + 9.08 gives 39.54 with each value rounded, and 39.53 from the exact total, so convert the total once if you need the exact figure.

A decimal hours calculator for common shifts

Most timesheets list shifts with a clock in, a clock out and an unpaid break. Subtract the break first, then convert the result with the decimal hours calculator. These common patterns show what each looks like in decimal.

Shift Hours and minutes Decimal hours Pay at $18.50
8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, 30 min break 8:00 8.00 $148.00
9:00 AM to 5:15 PM, 45 min break 7:30 7.50 $138.75
7:30 AM to 3:00 PM, no break 7:30 7.50 $138.75
6:00 AM to 2:40 PM, 20 min break 8:20 8.33 $154.17
10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, 30 min break 7:30 7.50 $138.75

Minutes to decimal in Excel and Google Sheets

Spreadsheets store a time as a fraction of a day, so multiplying a time cell by 24 gives decimal hours. If A1 holds 7:45, the formula =A1*24 returns 7.75, and the format of the result cell should be a number, not a time. If your hours and minutes sit in separate columns, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours.

A list of times can be summed first and multiplied once: =SUM(A1:A5)*24 gives the total in decimal hours with no rounding between rows. That is the same idea as the Timesheet column tab above.

More than 60 minutes: converting long durations

The minutes box accepts any number, which helps when a report gives a duration in total minutes. Divide by 60 for hours, and the remainder is the minutes left over.

Total minutes Hours and minutes Decimal hours
75 1:15 1.25
90 1:30 1.50
105 1:45 1.75
150 2:30 2.50
255 4:15 4.25
480 8:00 8.00
525 8:45 8.75

Minutes to decimal for payroll and billing

Payroll software, invoices and project tools all multiply hours by a rate, which needs decimal hours. A freelancer billing 3 hours 20 minutes at $60 an hour charges 3.33 × $60 = $199.80 if the hours are rounded to two places, but exactly $200.00 because 20 minutes is one third of an hour. That is why you may want three or four decimal places for billing. For overtime, convert first, then apply the multiplier with the overtime calculator.
