Ramadan 2027
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, so the first fast is on that day and the first taraweeh prayers are on the evening before. It is the month of Ramadan 1448 in the Hijri calendar and lasts 29 or 30 days, ending with Eid al-Fitr. Because Ramadan falls in February and March in 2027, the days are relatively short in the Northern Hemisphere, which means shorter fasts from dawn (suhoor) to sunset (iftar) than when Ramadan fell in summer. The last ten nights include Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, which many Muslims seek in the odd-numbered nights.
- Before Ramadan: plan suhoor and iftar meals, and mark the expected start date on the calendar.
- During Ramadan: many families keep a Ramadan calendar for children to color one day at a time.
- Zakat al-Fitr: a charity paid before the Eid prayer, so everyone can celebrate.
Eid al Fitr 2027
Eid al-Fitr (also written Eid al Fitr) 2027 is expected on Tuesday, March 9, after the new crescent moon is sighted at the end of Ramadan. The day starts with the Eid prayer, followed by visits to family and friends, new clothes, sweets and gifts for children. In many countries Eid is a public holiday lasting one to three days or more. If the moon is not seen on the 29th evening of Ramadan, the month completes 30 days and Eid moves to the next day.
Eid al Adha 2027 and the Hajj
Eid al-Adha (Eid al Adha) 2027 is expected on Sunday, May 16, with the Day of Arafah, the high point of the Hajj pilgrimage, on Saturday, May 15. Eid al-Adha remembers the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, and many families share the meat of a sacrificed animal with relatives, neighbors and people in need. It is celebrated for several days, and many Muslims fast on the Day of Arafah if they are not on pilgrimage.
Islamic New Year, Ashura and Mawlid
The Islamic New Year, 1 Muharram 1449, is expected on Sunday, June 6, 2027, followed by Ashura on Tuesday, June 15. Mawlid, the Prophet’s Birthday, is expected on Saturday, August 14. Isra and Mi’raj falls twice in 2027, on January 5 and December 25, because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year.
How the Islamic calendar works
The Hijri calendar has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 days in all, so Islamic holidays move through all the seasons over about 33 years. Each month starts when the new crescent moon is seen. Some countries use astronomical calculations, such as Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura calendar used for the dates on this page, while others wait for a local sighting, so the same holiday can fall a day apart in different countries. Wikipedia’s Islamic calendar article explains the months and how they are counted.
