Tip, Discount and Sales Tax Calculator

A tip calculator that splits the bill, plus percent-off sale prices and sales tax totals, each with the working shown and rounded to the cent.

This free tip calculator handles three everyday money questions in one place: how much to tip and how to split the bill, what you pay after a percent-off sale, and the total once sales tax is added. Pick a tab, type the amount and the percent, and every answer comes with the working, rounded to the cent.

It is also a tip calculator with tax: tick one box and it works out the tip on the amount before tax, which is how many people prefer to tip. The same page is a discount calculator and a sales tax calculator, so a shopping trip and a restaurant bill never need two tools.

Fast mental math: 10% of any bill is the amount with the decimal point moved one place left. Double it for a 20% tip, add half of it for 15%, and take it away for a 10% discount.

These are the questions people type into a tip calculator or a discount calculator most often. The answers are computed exactly, so you can read them off without opening the tool.

20% tip on $120 tip $24.00 total $144.00

How to use the tip calculator

Choose one of the three tabs. Each tab has its own boxes and quick percent buttons, and the answer updates as you type, so the tip calculator never needs a Calculate button. Tap Copy result to paste the numbers into a chat, or Copy link to these numbers to share the exact setup.

Tab You type You get
Tip calculator and split the bill the bill, the tip % and the number of people (optionally the tax rate) tip, total, each share and a table of 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%
Discount (percent off) the original price and the percent off, plus an optional extra coupon and tax sale price, the amount you save and the true total discount
Sales tax the price and the tax rate, or the total to remove the tax from the tax and the total, or the price before tax

Amounts are in dollars by default. Use the currency box to switch the symbol to pounds, euros, rupees or another currency; the math is identical.

Worked examples and a printable tip chart

Each card shows one calculation the tip calculator does, step by step. The printable tip chart covers bills from $10 to $150 at five tip rates, a handy card for a wallet or a restaurant-themed math lesson.

How to calculate a tip

A tip is a percent of the bill: tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100. On a $48 bill, an 18% tip is 48 × 0.18 = $8.64, so the total is $56.64. The tip calculator shows the tip, the total and, if you enter more than one person, each person’s share.

Customs vary from country to country. In the United States, many diners tip 15% to 20% at sit-down restaurants, while in many other countries service is included or tips are smaller; Wikipedia’s gratuity article compares customs around the world. Some people tip on the amount before tax and some on the total; type whichever amount you prefer into the tip calculator, or use the tip calculator with tax box described below.

  • 15%: 10% plus half of 10%. On $40, that is $4 + $2 = $6.
  • 20%: double 10%. On $65, that is $6.50 × 2 = $13.
  • 25%: a quarter of the bill. On $36, that is $9.

Tip chart: common bills at 15%, 18%, 20%, 22% and 25%

This table gives the tip amount for common bill sizes, so you can read a tip without any math. Think of it as a tip calculator you can read at a glance. Add the tip to the bill for the total, for example $60 plus $12.00 is $72.00 at 20%.

Bill 15% tip 18% tip 20% tip 22% tip 25% tip
$10 $1.50 $1.80 $2.00 $2.20 $2.50

$200 $30.00 $36.00 $40.00 $44.00 $50.00

Tip calculator with tax: tip before or after tax?

The most common question about a restaurant tip is whether to calculate it on the pre-tax food total or on the final bill. There is no rule. Tipping on the amount before tax is a little cheaper and reflects the service on the food and drinks only.

Tipping on the total is simpler because you just use the number at the bottom of the receipt. This tip calculator with tax lets you choose: tick My bill includes sales tax, enter the tax rate, and it works backward to the pre-tax amount before it applies the tip.

Here is the difference on a meal that costs $50 before 8.25% sales tax. The receipt total is $54.13, and the table shows the tip each way.

Tip Tip on $50 before tax Tip on $54.13 total Difference Pay in all (tip before tax) Pay in all (tip on total)
15 $7.50 $8.12 $0.62 $61.63 $62.25
18 $9.00 $9.74 $0.74 $63.13 $63.87
20 $10.00 $10.83 $0.83 $64.13 $64.96

The gap is small: at 20% it is about 82 cents on a $50 meal. If you only have the receipt total, divide it by 1 plus the tax rate to get the pre-tax amount: $54.13 ÷ 1.0825 = $50.00. The calculator does that step for you when the tax box is ticked.

How much to tip for different services: a guide to use with the tip calculator

These are typical ranges in the United States, not rules. Use more for excellent service, a large group or a difficult order, and check whether a service charge is already included on the bill.

Service Typical tip Notes
Sit-down restaurant 15% to 20% 18% to 20% is common today; many people use 20% for good service
Buffet or counter service 0% to 10% A tip jar or 10% for table help is common
Food delivery 10% to 20% Many people add a few dollars minimum on small orders or in bad weather
Bar $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of the tab Higher for complicated cocktails
Taxi or rideshare 10% to 20% Round up for short rides
Hair salon or barber 15% to 20% Tip each person who helped you, such as the stylist and the shampoo assistant
Hotel housekeeping $2 to $5 per night Leave it daily, because staff can change
Tour guide 10% to 20% Often per person for a group tour

Tipping customs around the world

Tipping is an expectation in some countries and an unusual gesture in others. Check this summary before you use the tip calculator abroad; it is a rough guide for travelers, the Wikipedia article linked above has the detail.

Country or region What is usual
United States and Canada 15% to 20% in restaurants; the service is not included in the menu price
United Kingdom About 10% to 12.5%, often added as a service charge, so check the bill first
France and much of Europe Service is usually included; rounding up or leaving a few coins is common
Japan Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion
Australia and New Zealand Not expected; a small tip for excellent service is welcome
India Around 5% to 10% if no service charge is added
Mexico 10% to 15% is common in restaurants

How to split the bill fairly

To share the cost evenly, add the tip first, then divide the total by the number of people. For example, an $84 dinner with a 20% tip comes to $100.80, or $25.20 each for four people. Enter the bill, the tip percent and the number of people and the tip calculator does both steps at once.

If the answer does not divide into whole cents, round each share up by a cent so the group does not come up short. When people ordered very different amounts, split the bill by item instead: each person adds up their own dishes, then adds the same tip percent to their part. Choose Round each share up in the tool if you would rather pay in whole dollars.

Each person’s share with a 20% tip

Use this table to split the bill quickly when you do not have the tip calculator open. The tip is already included, so each amount is the final share for one person.

Bill before tip 2 people 3 people 4 people 5 people 6 people 8 people
$40 bill $24.00 $16.00 $12.00 $9.60 $8.00 $6.00

$80 bill $48.00 $32.00 $24.00 $19.20 $16.00 $12.00
$100 bill $60.00 $40.00 $30.00 $24.00 $20.00 $15.00
$150 bill $90.00 $60.00 $45.00 $36.00 $30.00 $22.50
$200 bill $120.00 $80.00 $60.00 $48.00 $40.00 $30.00
$300 bill $180.00 $120.00 $90.00 $72.00 $60.00 $45.00

Discount calculator and percent off calculator

A discount is also a percent of the price: discount = price × percent ÷ 100, and sale price = price − discount. A $60 jacket at 25% off saves $15, so it costs $45. The quicker way is to work out what you still pay: 25% off means paying 75%, and 0.75 × 60 = 45. The percent off calculator tab shows both the sale price and how much you save.

Stacked offers are a classic trap. “20% off, then an extra 10% off” is not 30% off: the second discount applies to the already reduced price, so you pay 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 of the original, which is 28% off. Use the extra percent box in the discount calculator to check any double deal, or run it twice, using the first sale price as the new amount.

Sale price after 10% to 70% off

This lookup table answers questions like 20% off $45 or 15% off $120 without any typing. Find the original price in the left column and the percent off along the top; the number is what you pay. Subtract it from the original price to see how much you save.

20% off: sale price and savings for any amount

Twenty percent off is the most searched sale, and it is easy to do in your head: take 10%, double it, and subtract. For $45, 10% is $4.50, double is $9.00, and $45 − $9.00 = $36.00. So 20% off $45 is $36.00, and you save $9.00. The table lists more prices.

Buy one, get one 50% off 25% off the pair You pay 1 + 0.5 = 1.5 of 2 items
Buy two, get one free (3 for 2) about 33.3% off You pay for 2 of 3 items
Second item 30% off 15% off the pair You pay 1 + 0.7 = 1.7 of 2 items
$10 off $50 20% off 10 ÷ 50 = 0.20
$25 off $100 25% off 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25

Finding the percent off or the original price

Use the discount tab to go the other way. To find the percent off, divide the savings by the original price: a coat marked down from $80 to $52 saves $28, and 28 ÷ 80 = 0.35, so it is 35% off. To find the original price from a sale price, divide by the share you paid: a sale price of $45 after 25% off means 45 ÷ 0.75 = $60.

Sales tax calculator: price plus tax

Sales tax is added on top of the price: total = price × (1 + tax rate ÷ 100). A $120 item with 8.25% tax costs $120 × 1.0825 = $129.90, of which $9.90 is tax. Rates depend on where you shop.

In the United States most states charge a statewide sales tax and many cities and counties add their own, while five states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon) have no statewide sales tax; see sales taxes in the United States for the details. Use your local combined rate for the most accurate total.

To find the price before tax from a receipt total, divide instead of multiply: $129.90 ÷ 1.0825 = $120. This reverse step is useful when a price list already includes tax, and the tool does it when you choose Price before tax.

Sales tax, VAT and GST

Many countries charge VAT (value added tax) or GST (goods and services tax) instead of a US-style sales tax. The arithmetic is the same: multiply by 1 plus the rate to add it, and divide by 1 plus the rate to take it out. The main difference is that VAT and GST are usually already included in the shelf price, so the reverse step comes up more often. Pick the currency symbol you need and enter the local rate, the same way you would in the tip calculator.

Does the discount come before or after tax?

In most stores the sale price is reduced first and the tax is applied to the lower price, so the discount also lowers your tax. Because multiplication can be done in any order, the total is the same either way when the tax is charged on the discounted price: $100 × 0.8 × 1.08 = $86.40. A few coupons (for example some manufacturer coupons) are applied after tax is figured on the full price, so your tax is higher. Check the receipt if the total looks off.

Putting it together: three real-life examples for the tip calculator and discount calculator

  1. Dinner for four. In the tip calculator with tax, the food and drinks cost $92.40 before 8.25% tax. Tax is $7.62, so the receipt is $100.02. A 20% tip on the pre-tax amount is $18.48, which makes the total $118.50 and $29.63 each (rounded to the cent).
  2. Shopping trip. A $75 sweater is 30% off, so it costs $52.50. With 7% sales tax the total is $52.50 × 1.07 = $56.18.
  3. Sale with a coupon. A $120 jacket is 25% off, then you add a 10% coupon: $120 × 0.75 × 0.9 = $81.00, which is 32.5% off in total. Add 8% tax and you pay $87.48.

Practice: money math for students

Tips, discounts and tax are some of the most practical percent problems in school math. Try these, then check them with the tip calculator:

  1. A $35 meal with a 20% tip, split between 2 people. (Each pays $21.00.)
  2. A $90 pair of shoes at 30% off. (Sale price $63.00.)
  3. A $45 game with 6% sales tax. (Total $47.70.)
  4. A $200 bike at 15% off, then 7% tax on the sale price. (Sale price $170.00, total $181.90.)

Tip calculator: frequently asked questions

Does the tip calculator round to cents?

Yes, the tip calculator shows every answer to the nearest cent.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly cheaper; tipping on the total is simpler. Tick the tax box in the tip calculator to tip on the pre-tax amount, or leave it unticked to tip on the number you type.

How do I split the bill with a tip?

Choose the Tip and split the bill tab of the tip calculator, enter the bill, the tip percent and the number of people. The tip calculator adds the tip first and then divides the total evenly.

What is 20% off $45?

20% off $45 is $36.00. The discount is $9.00 (45 × 0.20), and you pay 80% of the price, 45 × 0.80 = $36.00.

What is 15% off $120?

15% off $120 is $102.00. You save $18.00 and pay 85% of the price.

How do I work out 30% off?

Multiply the price by 0.70, because you pay 70%. In the discount tab, enter the price and 30.

Is 20% off and then 20% off the same as 40% off?

No. You pay 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64 of the price, which is 36% off.

What is a 20% tip on $80?

A 20% tip on $80 is $16.00, so the total is $96.00. For $120 it is $24.00. The tip calculator gives any amount instantly.

How much should I tip on a $50 bill?

The tip calculator shows 15% is $7.50, 18% is $9.00, 20% is $10.00 and 25% is $12.50. The tip chart above covers other bill sizes.

How do I calculate a tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20% or add half of it for 15%.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by the share you paid. If 25% was taken off and you paid $45, divide 45 by 0.75 to get $60.

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal, then add it: $120 at 8.25% is 120 × 0.0825 = $9.90 tax, for a total of $129.90.

Can I use the sales tax calculator for VAT?

Yes. VAT and GST are percent taxes too, so enter the price before tax and the VAT rate to get the total. To take VAT out of a price, choose Price before tax.

Can I change the currency?

Yes. Use the currency box above the tip calculator to switch the symbol. The math does not change.
