How to get better at a geography quiz
Flags and capitals look like pure memory, but a few habits make them stick far faster than reading a list.
- One continent at a time. Master the 12 countries of South America before tackling the 54 of Africa. Every regional quiz is linked in the table above.
- Learn the look-alikes together. Chad and Romania have almost identical flags; Indonesia and Monaco share red over white in different proportions; Ireland and Côte d’Ivoire use the same colours in reverse order; Australia and New Zealand differ in their stars. Knowing the pairs turns a guess into a certainty.
- Watch for trick capitals. The biggest city is often not the capital: Canberra, not Sydney; Ottawa, not Toronto; Ankara, not Istanbul; Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro; Abuja, not Lagos.
- Test, do not just read. Trying to recall an answer, even wrongly, strengthens memory more than rereading it. That is why the review screen matters: replay the missed questions straight away.
- Space it out. Two short rounds on different days beat one long session. Come back tomorrow and try to beat your streak.
The flags quiz follows the United Nations list of member states, all 193 countries, plus Vatican City. For maps to go with the quizzes, see our continents and oceans worksheets and states and capitals worksheets.
Hosting a class quiz or family quiz night
- Make teams. Groups of three or four keep everyone talking and stop one person answering everything.
- Go full screen. Put the quiz on a TV or whiteboard and let teams agree an answer before the timer runs out.
- Hand out answer sheets. Print the write-in version so teams can record answers for rounds without a screen.
- Mix the rounds. Try flags, then animals, then a festival round, so every age has a favourite.
- Review together. Read out the missed questions at the end. The surprises are often the best part.
Printable quiz sheets with answer keys
Every quiz on this page has a printable quiz version. Choose multiple choice, with four options per question, or write-in, where children write the answer themselves. The flags quiz prints as a grid of 20 flags per page to name, and the flags and capitals quizzes can be limited to one continent or level. All sheets print on US Letter or A4 with the answer key on the last page, so they double as homework, a lesson starter or a quick end-of-unit check.
Trivia questions for kids: what makes a good one?
The best trivia questions for kids have one clear answer, use words children know and teach something even when they get it wrong. “What is the largest animal that has ever lived?” works because the answer, the blue whale, surprises most people and sticks. Our question banks avoid trick wording, and each multiple-choice question has three believable wrong answers rather than silly ones, so children have to think.

What is a good geography quiz for beginners?

Which quiz is best for Indian students?
