Passover 2027
Passover 2027 (Pesach) begins at sundown on Wednesday, April 21 with the first Seder, and the first day of the festival is Thursday, April 22. It lasts seven days in Israel, ending on Wednesday, April 28, and eight days in many communities outside Israel, ending on Thursday, April 29, with a second Seder on the evening of April 22. Passover is late in 2027 because the Hebrew year 5787 is a leap year with an extra month, Adar II, which also moves Purim to Tuesday, March 23.
Rosh Hashanah 2027 and Yom Kippur 2027
Rosh Hashanah 2027, the Jewish New Year 5788, begins at sundown on Friday, October 1 and is celebrated on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3. Families eat apples dipped in honey for a sweet year, and the shofar is blown in synagogue (except on Shabbat, so in 2027 it is heard on the second day). The Ten Days of Repentance lead to Yom Kippur 2027, the Day of Atonement, which begins with Kol Nidre on the evening of Sunday, October 10 and ends at nightfall on Monday, October 11. It is a 25-hour fast spent largely in prayer.
Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah
Sukkot begins at sundown on Friday, October 15, with the first day on Saturday, October 16. For seven days families eat meals in a sukkah, a temporary hut with a roof of branches. Shemini Atzeret follows on Saturday, October 23, and Simchat Torah, when the yearly cycle of Torah readings ends and begins again with singing and dancing, is on October 23 in Israel and Sunday, October 24 in most communities abroad.
Hanukkah 2027
Hanukkah 2027 begins at sundown on Friday, December 24, when the first candle is lit, and the first day is Saturday, December 25, the same day as Christmas. The eight-day Festival of Lights continues to Saturday, January 1, 2028, with one more candle lit on the menorah each night. Families play dreidel and eat foods fried in oil, such as latkes and sufganiyot, to remember the miracle of the oil in the Temple.

How the Hebrew calendar works
The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and a leap month is added seven times in every 19 years to keep the festivals in their seasons, so Passover always falls in spring. Days begin at sunset, which is why every holiday starts the evening before. Wikipedia’s Hebrew calendar article explains the months, leap years and how the dates are calculated.
