The Common Core grade 7 math standards group the year into five domains:
| Domain | What students do | Practice here |
|---|---|---|
| Ratios and proportional relationships (7.RP) | Find unit rates, solve proportions and solve percent problems such as tax, discount, tip and percent change | Ratios and proportions, Percents |
| The number system (7.NS) | Add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers, including negative fractions and decimals | Integers |
| Expressions and equations (7.EE) | Simplify expressions, solve two-step equations and inequalities | One-step equations, Two-step equations |
| Geometry (7.G) | Scale drawings, circles, angles, area, surface area and volume | Area calculator, Volume calculator |
| Statistics and probability (7.SP) | Sampling, comparing populations and finding the probability of simple and compound events | Mean, median and mode calculator |
Percent change, discount and tax: four worked examples
Percent change is the change divided by the original amount, times 100. A positive answer is an increase and a negative answer is a decrease. Discount works the other way: multiply the price by one minus the discount rate.
| Situation | Calculation | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| A jacket goes from $80 to $92 | (92 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 | +15% |
| A game score goes from 50 to 42 | (42 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100 | −16% |
| A $24 shirt is 25% off | Sale price = 24 × (1 − 0.25) | $18.00 |
| A phone plan goes from $35 to $42 | (42 − 35) ÷ 35 × 100 | +20% |
Check these with the percentage calculator or the discount, tax and tip calculator, and print the percent worksheets for more practice.
Proportional relationships: unit rate and the equation y = kx
In a proportional relationship, y is always the same multiple of x. That multiple, k, is the constant of proportionality, or unit rate. Here are three situations with the unit rate and the equation:
| Situation | Constant of proportionality | Equation |
|---|---|---|
| A car travels 150 miles in 3 hours | 50 miles per hour | d = 50t |
| A worker earns $96 in 8 hours | 12 dollars per hour | e = 12h |
| A faucet fills 45 liters in 9 minutes | 5 liters per minute | v = 5m |
The same idea is in the ratios and proportions worksheets: if 3 pens cost $4.50, then the unit price is $1.50 and 7 pens cost $10.50.
Rational number operations: eight examples
Grade 7 extends the rules for integers to all rational numbers, including fractions and decimals. Same signs add; different signs subtract the sizes and keep the sign of the larger; subtracting means adding the opposite; and multiplying or dividing two numbers with the same sign gives a positive answer.
| Problem | Answer |
|---|---|
| −8 + 5 | −3 |
| −3 − (−9) | 6 |
| −4 × 6 | −24 |
| −36 ÷ (−9) | 4 |
| 7 − 12 | −5 |
| −2.5 + 4.75 | 2.25 |
| −1/2 + 3/4 | 1/4 |
| (−3) × (−5) | 15 |
Print the integer worksheets for sheets on these rules.
Probability: rolling two dice
The probability of an event is the number of outcomes that match it divided by the number of all possible outcomes. When you roll two dice there are 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely outcomes. The table shows how many produce each sum:
| Sum of two dice | Ways to roll it (out of 36) | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 1/36 = 2.8% |
| 3 | 2 | 2/36 = 5.6% |
| 4 | 3 | 3/36 = 8.3% |
| 5 | 4 | 4/36 = 11.1% |
| 6 | 5 | 5/36 = 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 6/36 = 16.7% |
| 8 | 5 | 5/36 = 13.9% |
| 9 | 4 | 4/36 = 11.1% |
| 10 | 3 | 3/36 = 8.3% |
| 11 | 2 | 2/36 = 5.6% |
| 12 | 1 | 1/36 = 2.8% |
A sum of 7 is the most likely, with 6 ways out of 36 (one sixth), while 2 and 12 each have only one way.
Seventh grade math worksheets and grade 7 math worksheets
Families and teachers use many names for the same collection: seventh grade math worksheets, grade 7 math worksheets, math worksheets for 7th graders and printable 7th grade math worksheets. All of them lead to the free PDFs on this page. Every sheet is a PDF for US Letter or A4, and 7th grade math worksheets with answers are what you get: each file ends with an answer key, so students can check their own work.
For 7th grade math practice that goes beyond a single sheet, use the Customize button to build a new set of problems for the same skill, or use the free calculators listed below. Practicing 7th grade math in short sessions, one skill at a time, works better than long catch-up sessions before a test.
A weekly plan for 7th grade math
A common guideline is about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night, or about 70 minutes in 7th grade for all subjects, so the blocks below are part of the evening:

|---|---|---|
| Monday | Percents: percent worksheets | 20 min |
| Tuesday | Ratios and proportions | 20 min |
| Wednesday | Integers and rational numbers | 20 min |
| Thursday | Equations: one-step and two-step | 20 min |
| Weekly total | Four short sessions, with one free day | 80 min |

Common mistakes in 7th grade math, and how to fix them
Most errors in grade 7 come from a handful of habits. Knowing them helps a parent or teacher spot the problem quickly:
| Mistake | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Subtracting a negative as a negative | 5 − (−3) = 2 | Subtracting means adding the opposite: 5 + 3 = 8 |
| Using the new amount as the base for percent change | From 80 to 92 written as 12 ÷ 92 | Divide by the original amount: 12 ÷ 80 = 15% |
| Thinking every table is proportional | x: 1, 2, 3 and y: 3, 5, 7 | Check that y ÷ x is constant; here it is not (3, 2.5, 2.33) |
| Undoing in the wrong order | 2x + 3 = 11 solved by dividing by 2 first | Undo addition first: 2x = 8, then x = 4 |
| Adding denominators in probability | 1/6 + 1/6 written as 2/12 | Keep the denominator: 1/6 + 1/6 = 2/6 = 1/3 |
| Forgetting that a negative times a negative is positive | (−4) × (−3) = −12 | Same signs give a positive: 12 |
A 7th grade math skills checklist
Use this checklist at the start and end of the year. A child who can tick every line is ready for 8th grade:
- Find a unit rate and the constant of proportionality from a table or a graph.
- Solve a proportion such as 3/4 = x/20.
- Solve percent problems: tax, tip, discount, markup and percent change.
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide positive and negative fractions and decimals.
- Simplify expressions with like terms and the distributive property.
- Solve two-step equations such as 3x − 5 = 16.
- Find the circumference and area of a circle.
- Find the volume and surface area of prisms.
- Find the probability of a simple event and of a compound event.
- Compare two data sets using the mean and the spread.
How to use these worksheets at home or in class
Start with a skill the class is working on, print one worksheet, and let the student work without help for the first half. Then check together with the answer key and look for a pattern in the mistakes, rather than only counting the correct answers. A repeated sign error, for example, points to a rule that needs another look.
Seventh grade is a good time to build the habit of checking an answer. Percent problems can be checked by estimating (10% of 80 is 8), equations by substituting the answer back into the original, and proportions by comparing unit rates. Ask the student to show the check on paper for one problem per page.
