The 2 times table game on this page practices 2 × 1 to 2 × 12 with four free games: Balloon Pop, Memory Match, Answer Race and True or False. Questions come in random order, so children learn the 2 times tables as facts they can recall and not as a chant. This is the first table most children learn, and it is built on doubling. The whole table is 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24. There is no sign-up, scores stay on your device, and it works on phones, tablets and computers.
2 times table game: see how it plays
Each of the four modes asks only 2 times table questions, from 2 × 1 up to 2 × 12. The pictures show Balloon Pop, Memory Match and Answer Race on this page, and the printable chart puts all twelve facts, skip counting and a trick on one sheet.

How the 2 times table game works
- Balloon Pop: answers float up on balloons, and you pop the right one before it drifts off the top. The wrong balloons sit within 4 of the right answer, so you have to know the fact and not just spot the odd one out. The game speeds up as your score climbs, and three misses ends the round.
- Memory Match: twelve face-down cards hide six 2 times table questions and their six answers. Flip two at a time and match each question to its answer in as few moves as you can.
- Answer Race: every right answer moves your car forward, and you race three computer cars to the finish flag. The first to 15 wins, and wrong taps cost time, not places.
- True or False: sixty seconds on the clock. Decide whether each 2 times table sentence, such as 2 × 2 = 4, is right or wrong. A streak of five or more scores double.
The 2 times tables at a glance
Here is every fact in the 2 times tables with a quick way to build it from facts you already know:
| Fact | Answer | Build it from |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × 1 | 2 | 1 + 1 |
| 2 × 2 | 4 | 2 + 2 |
| 2 × 3 | 6 | 3 + 3 |
| 2 × 4 | 8 | 4 + 4 |
| 2 × 5 | 10 | 5 + 5 |
| 2 × 6 | 12 | 6 + 6 |
| 2 × 7 | 14 | 7 + 7 |
| 2 × 8 | 16 | 8 + 8 |
| 2 × 9 | 18 | 9 + 9 |
| 2 × 10 | 20 | 10 + 10 |
| 2 × 11 | 22 | 11 + 11 |
| 2 × 12 | 24 | 12 + 12 |
Skip counting by 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24. Say the numbers aloud while you walk or jump, because rhythm helps memory. Our guide to skip counting for kids has more ideas.
Multiplication by 2: patterns and tricks
Every answer in the 2 times table is an even number, and the last digit repeats in a loop of five: 2, 4, 6, 8, 0, then 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 again, so the table runs 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24. Multiples of 2 are exactly the even numbers.
The quickest way to multiply by 2 is to double. 2 × 7 is 7 + 7 = 14, and for a bigger number you can double the tens and the ones separately: 2 × 36 is 60 + 12 = 72. Doubling is also the building block for the 4 and 8 times tables.
Wikipedia’s multiplication table article shows the full grid and how it has been taught for centuries.
Only 11 new facts to learn in the 2 times tables
Because 2 × 1 is the same as 1 × 2, you can start from 2 × 2. That leaves 11 facts to learn, from 2 × 2 = 4 up to 2 × 12 = 24, and doubling makes every one of them quick.
Two times table practice: the hardest facts
The facts that children most often miss in two times table practice are 2 × 6 = 12, 2 × 7 = 14, 2 × 8 = 16 and 2 × 9 = 18. The facts in the teens are slower to say than the early ones, but doubling makes every one of them easy. The game keeps the questions random, so these facts come up again and again until they feel automatic.
The 2 times table in real life
- Pairs: a pair of socks is 2 socks, so 8 pairs make 2 × 8 = 16 socks.
- Bicycles: each has 2 wheels, so 9 bicycles have 2 × 9 = 18 wheels.
- Hands and eyes: 2 hands each have 5 fingers, so 2 × 5 = 10 fingers.
2 times table word problems

- Mia buys 2 stickers for each of her 11 friends. How many stickers does she buy? Answer: 22.
- A pack has 2 pencils. How many pencils are in 9 packs? Answer: 18.
- There are 12 pairs of boots by the door. How many boots is that? Answer: 24.
Where the 2 times table fits at school
In the United States, the Common Core standards (3.OA.C.7) expect children to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 3, so the 2 times table is a grade 3 skill. In England, pupils are expected to know the tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4, and the national multiplication tables check is taken in June of that year. Short, frequent practice with a 2 times table game works better than one long session, because it spaces out the facts.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Start with the easy facts: 2 × 1 = 2, 2 × 2 = 4, 2 × 5 = 10 and 2 × 10 = 20. Then add 2 × 3 = 6, 2 × 4 = 8, 2 × 11 = 22 and 2 × 12 = 24.
- Play Memory Match first for accuracy, then move to Balloon Pop or Answer Race for speed.
- A few minutes a day beats one long session. Try to beat yesterday’s best score, and plan on two to three weeks for the new facts.
- Ask “how did you know?” after a round. Hearing “I doubled it” or “I used the 10s” tells you the strategy is there.
