Rulers that really measure
Our measuring worksheets are drawn to actual size: when you print at 100% (turn off “fit to page” in the print settings), every inch on the page is a real inch and every centimeter is a real centimeter. That means children can check their answers with a real ruler, and the printed rulers on the sheet can be cut out and used again.
Measurement by grade
| Grade | What children practice |
|---|---|
| Grades 1 and 2 | Measuring length with rulers in inches and centimeters (1.MD.A.2, 2.MD.A.1) |
| Grade 3 | Area by counting unit squares, area of rectangles and perimeter (3.MD.C, 3.MD.D.8) |
| Grade 4 | Converting larger units to smaller units, area and perimeter formulas (4.MD.A.1, 4.MD.A.3) |
Area or perimeter?
Perimeter is the distance around the outside, like a fence; area is the space inside, like the grass. On a grid, count the edges of the squares around the outside for perimeter, and count the squares for area.
What is in the measurement worksheets
There are 20 measurement worksheets in three sets, each with an answer key:
- Measuring length with a ruler (Grades 1 to 3, 6 worksheets)
- Converting units of measurement (Grades 4 and 5, 6 worksheets)
- Area and perimeter (Grades 3 and 4, 8 worksheets)
Measuring length worksheets: customary and metric units
Measuring length worksheets use two systems of units. The customary system is used in the United States, and the metric system everywhere else. The conversions that matter most are these, and the inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters:
| Unit | Equals | In other units |
|---|---|---|
| 1 foot | 12 inches | 30.48 centimeters |
| 1 yard | 3 feet | 36 inches, 0.9144 meters |
| 1 mile | 5,280 feet | 1,760 yards, 1.609 kilometers |
| 1 inch | 2.54 centimeters exactly | 25.4 millimeters |
| 1 meter | 100 centimeters | 39.37 inches |
| 1 kilometer | 1,000 meters | 0.621 miles |
Children first measure with whole units, to the nearest inch or centimeter, and later to the nearest half and quarter inch (2.MD.A.1). Wikipedia’s article on units of measurement describes both systems.
Ruler worksheets: reading the marks
An inch ruler has marks of four sizes, and the longer the mark, the simpler the fraction. Ruler worksheets that print at actual size let children check their answers with a real ruler. On a ruler with sixteenths, the marks are:
| Mark on the inch ruler | Fraction of an inch | In sixteenths |
|---|---|---|
| Longest mark | 1/2 | 8/16 |
| Next mark | 1/4 and 3/4 | 4/16 and 12/16 |
| Next marks | 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8 | 2/16, 6/16, 10/16, 14/16 |
| Shortest marks | 1/16, 3/16, 5/16 and so on | 8 marks: the odd sixteenths |
A metric ruler is easier, because every centimeter has 10 millimeters. A child who measures 6.4 cm has measured six full centimeters and four millimeters.
Converting units worksheets: six examples
Converting units worksheets ask children to change a measurement from one unit to another. The rule is to multiply when you go to a smaller unit, because you need more of them, and divide when you go to a larger one. Here are six conversions with the working:
| Convert | Working |
|---|---|
| 5 feet 3 inches in inches | 5 × 12 + 3 = 63 inches |
| 250 centimeters in meters | 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5 meters |
| 3.5 kilometers in meters | 3.5 × 1,000 = 3,500 meters |
| 2 yards in inches | 2 × 36 = 72 inches |
| 1 hour 45 minutes in minutes | 60 + 45 = 105 minutes |
| 3 pounds in ounces | 3 × 16 = 48 ounces |
Grade 4 children convert larger units to smaller units within one system (4.MD.A.1) and make tables of the values.
Measurement worksheets for capacity, weight and time
Length is only one of the things that the measurement worksheets cover. Children also measure how much a container holds, how heavy something is and how long something takes. These are the conversions they need, in both systems:
| Quantity | Customary | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces; 1 pint = 2 cups; 1 quart = 2 pints; 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 16 cups | 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters |
| Weight or mass | 1 pound = 16 ounces; 1 ton = 2,000 pounds | 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams |
| Time | 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds | the same; 1 day = 24 hours |
Children should handle a few real containers before they use the measurement worksheets on capacity: a cup, a pint jar, a liter bottle. Weight is the same, and a bag of flour is a good kilogram or two-pound weight. The time worksheets use the conversions 60 seconds = 1 minute and 60 minutes = 1 hour, which are not base ten, so children find them harder than metric units.
Estimating before measuring
An estimate is a good guess. Children who estimate before they measure get a feel for the units, and they notice when an answer is silly, such as a pencil that is 70 centimeters long. These benchmarks are useful for the estimating problems on the worksheets:
| Object | About how long, wide or heavy | Use this unit |
|---|---|---|
| Width of a finger | 1 centimeter | centimeters |
| Length of a paper clip | 1 inch (2.5 cm) | inches |
| Sheet of letter paper | 11 inches (28 cm) | inches |
| Height of a door | 2 meters (6.5 feet) | meters or feet |
| Walk for 1 minute | about 100 meters | meters |
| A gallon of milk | 8.6 pounds (3.9 kg) | pounds |
Ask children to guess the length of five objects, measure them, and find the difference between each guess and the real length. A good estimator is within 10 to 20 percent after a little practice.
Area and perimeter worksheets: same perimeter, different area
Perimeter is the distance around a shape, and area is the space inside. The two do not change together, which surprises many children. These six rectangles all have the same perimeter of 24 units, but their areas are very different:
| Rectangle | Perimeter | Area |
|---|---|---|
| 1 by 11 | 24 | 11 |
| 2 by 10 | 24 | 20 |
| 3 by 9 | 24 | 27 |
| 4 by 8 | 24 | 32 |
| 5 by 7 | 24 | 35 |
| 6 by 6 | 24 | 36 |
The square is the rectangle with the most area for a given perimeter. A farmer with 24 meters of fence gets the biggest pen by making a 6 by 6 square, with 36 square meters, and the least with a 1 by 11 strip, with 11 square meters. Area and perimeter worksheets that ask children to find all the rectangles with a given perimeter are a good way to find this out (3.MD.D.8).

Frequently asked questions
3 quick answers
Why print at 100%?
Printers often shrink pages slightly to fit. Printing at actual size keeps the rulers true, so an inch on the page is a real inch.
What is the difference between area and perimeter?
Perimeter measures around a shape (units like cm). Area measures the space inside (square units like square cm).
