Free online calculators answer a number question and show the working, so you can check the result instead of trusting it. PrintSheetLab has 70 of them, from a mortgage payment and a percentage to days between dates, BMI, grades and paint for a room. They run in your browser with no sign-up.
Quick answer: To choose among these free online calculators, start with the question. A money question goes to a loan, tax or pay calculator, a date question to a date calculator, and a homework question to a calculator with steps. For example, 15% of 80 is 0.15 × 80 = 12, and the percentage calculator shows that line by line.

How to use these free online calculators

What each group of free online calculators is for
The free online calculators fall into nine groups, and the cards above list every tool. Here is what each group is for, with real numbers.
Money, tax and pay
A $320,000 mortgage at 6.5% over 30 years costs $2,022.62 a month in principal and interest, and $10,000 at 5% with monthly compounding grows to $16,470.09 in 10 years. At $25 an hour, a 2,080 hour year pays $52,000. Adding 20% VAT to £100 gives £120. Rates are editable examples, and results are estimates, not financial advice.
Dates and time
The days between dates calculator finds that 8 October 2026 to 25 December 2026 is 78 days, or 11 weeks and 1 day. At 9:00 a.m. in New York on October 8, 2026 it is 2:00 p.m. in London, but from October 25 to November 1 the gap shrinks from 5 hours to 4 because the UK changes its clocks first.
Math, algebra, geometry and statistics
A step by step calculator names the method and applies it. For 3/4 + 1/2 the common denominator is 4, so 3/4 + 2/4 = 5/4, or 1 1/4. For 4, 7, 7, 9 and 13, the mean is 8, the median and mode are 7 and the range is 9. The equation x² − 5x + 6 = 0 has roots 2 and 3.
School and grades
A 4 credit A, a 3 credit B and a 3 credit A earn 37 grade points over 10 credits, a 3.7 GPA. With an 85% average and a final worth 30%, you need 95% on the final to finish on 88%. The final grade calculator does that sum for any set of grades.
Dice, coins and random picks
A pair of dice totals 7 in 6 of 36 ways, a chance of 16.67%, and three heads in a row from a fair coin has a chance of 12.5%. The random tools make chance fair and let you see the odds.
Health, converters and home projects
A BMI of 24.4 (5 ft 10 in, 170 pounds) sits inside the 18.5 to 24.9 range, though BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. Also, 350°F is 176.7°C, a US cup of flour weighs about 120 g, and 25 miles per US gallon is 9.41 liters per 100 km. A 10 ft by 10 ft slab 4 inches thick needs 1.23 cubic yards from the concrete calculator.
Calculator with steps: calculators for students and teachers
Free online calculators with steps can help children learn or help them skip learning, depending on how they are used. These habits keep it on the right side.
- Try it first. Work the problem on paper before you touch the calculator.
- Compare the steps. Find the first line where your working and the calculator differ.
- Explain it back. Say why each step happens, then print matching practice from the math worksheets.
Teachers can project calculators for students, change one number and ask the class to predict the new steps. Formulas worth knowing: percent of a number is (percent ÷ 100) × number, percent change is (new − old) ÷ old × 100, and Celsius to Fahrenheit is °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. The definitions of metric units behind the unit converter come from the NIST guide to SI units.
Formula cheat sheet for the most used calculators
| What you want | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percent of a number | (percent ÷ 100) × number | 15% of 80 = 12 |
| Percent change | (new − old) ÷ old × 100 | 80 to 100 = +25% |
| Mean (average) | sum of values ÷ how many values | 4, 7, 7, 9, 13 = 8 |
| Area of a rectangle | length × width | 8 × 5 = 40 |
| Area of a circle | π × radius² | r = 3 gives 28.27 |
| Simple interest | principal × rate × time | $1,000 at 5% for 3 years = $150 |
| Compound interest | principal × (1 + rate ÷ n)n × years | $1,000 at 5% yearly for 3 years = $1,157.63 |
| Monthly loan payment | L × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n) | $320,000 at 6.5%, 30 years = $2,022.62 |
| Celsius to Fahrenheit | °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 | 20°C = 68°F |
| BMI (pounds and inches) | 703 × pounds ÷ inches² | 170 lb, 70 in = 24.4 |
How to check the answer from any of these free online calculators
Even the best online calculators depend on what you type, so a 30 second check is worth the time. These five checks work for every calculator on the site.
- Estimate first. 15% of 80 is a little more than 10% of 80, which is 8, so expect about 12.
- Reverse the sum. If 12 is 15% of 80, then 12 ÷ 80 should give 0.15.
- Move one input. A higher loan rate must raise the payment, and a longer term must lower it.
- Check units and rounding. Miles against kilometers, pounds against kilograms, and whether the tool rounds only for display.
- Confirm big decisions. For a loan, tax or health choice, compare the result with the lender, the tax authority or your doctor.
Real-life uses for free online calculators
- Shopping. 30% off an $80 jacket takes $24 off, so you pay $56. Add 8% sales tax and the total is $60.48.
- School. A 3.7 GPA or a 95% needed on the final turns worry into a plan, using the GPA calculator and final grade calculator.
- Work. Planning a week of 48 hours at $20 an hour with time and a half after 40 hours pays $1,040.
- Cooking. A recipe asking for 2 cups of flour needs about 240 g of flour, and the oven setting 350°F is 177°C.
- DIY. A 12 ft by 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 square feet of wall, which is about one gallon per coat if the can covers 350 square feet.
- Travel. A 9:00 a.m. call in New York is 2:00 p.m. in London, or 6:30 p.m. in India, in October 2026.
Online calculators by country: what changes
Arithmetic is the same everywhere, but free online calculators must follow local taxes, accounts and units. The country hubs go deeper: USA calculators, Canada calculators, UK and Europe calculators and Australia calculators.
| Topic | United States | Canada | UK and Europe | Australia |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales tax | No national rate; states set theirs | GST 5% plus HST, PST or QST | VAT: UK 20%, EU 17% to 27% | GST 10% |
| Retirement | 401(k), IRA | RRSP, TFSA | Workplace pension, ISA | Superannuation |
| Overtime | 1.5× over 40 hours | Set by province | Set by contract | Set by award |
| Fuel economy | Miles per US gallon | Liters per 100 km | UK: miles per imperial gallon | Liters per 100 km |
| Temperature | Fahrenheit | Celsius | Celsius | Celsius |
| Date order | Month, day, year | Varies by province and person | Day, month, year | Day, month, year |

Units and calendars change too. Fuel economy is quoted in miles per US gallon in the United States, liters per 100 km in Canada and Australia, and miles per imperial gallon in the UK, where a gallon is 4.546 liters instead of 3.785. Daylight saving starts on different dates in each region, which the time zone converter handles by date.
The rates come from the Canada Revenue Agency, business.gov.au, Inland Revenue New Zealand, GOV.UK and the European Commission. Confirm a rate with your tax authority before an invoice or a decision.
Key terms in plain English
These terms appear across the free online calculators, so it helps to know what each one means before you type a number.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| APR | The yearly cost of borrowing, including fees, as a percent |
| Amortization | Paying a loan down with equal payments over time |
| Compound interest | Interest earned on the principal and on past interest |
| VAT / GST | A tax added at each sale and shown in the price you pay |
| Business day | A weekday that is not a public holiday |
| Standard deviation | How far values usually sit from the mean |
| BMI | Weight in kg divided by height in meters squared |
Questions people ask about online calculators
Is there a calculator with steps for free?
Yes, every calculator on this page is a free calculator with steps. Type the numbers, then open the working under the answer to see the formula and each line of arithmetic, with nothing to install and no account to create.
What is a step by step calculator?
A step by step calculator is a tool that shows how it reached the answer, not only the answer. It states the rule, puts your numbers into it and works through each stage, so you can check a method, learn it or explain it to someone else.
Do these online calculators work on a phone or full screen?
Yes. The layout shrinks to a single column on a phone, the keypad is a number pad, and a full screen button gives the calculator the whole display. On a classroom projector, full screen makes the numbers readable from the back row.
Are there free online calculators for kids?
Yes. The fraction, long division, rounding and time tools match primary and middle school topics, and each shows its steps in plain words. Pair them with printable practice from the math worksheets.
Frequently asked questions
11 quick answers
Are these free online calculators really free?
Yes. All 70 calculators are free, with no account, no limits and nothing to download. They work on phones, tablets, Chromebooks and computers, and the working is laid out to read on a small screen.
Is there a free calculator that shows steps?
Yes. Most of these calculators show the formula, your numbers in the formula and the result, covering fractions, percentages, long division, loans, grades and statistics. Open the working section under the answer to read each step.
What is the best free online calculator?
The best free online calculator is the one built for your exact question, because a general calculator cannot add PMI to a mortgage or find a z-score. Look for live results, visible working, clear units and no sign-up.
Do the calculators save or send my numbers?
No. Every calculation happens in your own browser, and nothing you type is sent to a server or stored. Close the page and the numbers are gone, which suits shared school devices.
Is using a calculator for homework cheating?
Not if you use one of these free online calculators to check your work and learn the method. Try the problem first, then compare your steps with the calculator’s steps and fix the first line that differs.
Which calculators are best for students?
Match the course: the fraction, percentage, ratio and long division tools for middle school, the quadratic, slope and standard deviation tools for algebra and statistics, and the GPA and final grade tools for planning a term.
Are online calculators accurate enough for real decisions?
They are accurate for the formula they use, but the inputs decide the answer. Use your own rate, tax and hours, treat the result as an estimate, and confirm figures that matter, such as a loan quote, with the lender.
Can I use these calculators outside the United States?
Yes. Free online calculators with a country option, such as the mortgage and tax calculators, let you pick your country and currency. The country hubs explain US, Canadian, UK, European and Australian rules.
What is the difference between a calculator and a calculator with steps?
A basic calculator returns only the answer. A calculator with steps also shows the formula, your numbers in the formula and each stage of the working, so you can check the method as well as the result.
How do I share a result from the calculators?
Use Copy result to paste the answer and a one line summary into a message, or Copy link to share the calculator with your numbers already filled in. The person who opens the link sees the same working.
Are the tax and interest rates current?
Tax tables were checked in October 2026. Interest rates are editable examples because lenders change them often, so type the rate from your own quote to match it.
