What third graders learn

Third grade is a turning point in both subjects. The goals below follow the Common Core grade 3 math standards and the reading standards used in many US schools; use them to choose worksheets for grade 3 that match the term.

Times tables: a smart order to learn them

Learning the tables in number order, 1 to 10, is the slow way. This order builds on what children already know, and the turn-around rule (3 × 7 is the same as 7 × 3) means every new table has fewer new facts than the last.

  1. 2s, 5s and 10s. These are skip counting children already know from earlier grades.
  2. 4s and 3s. The 4s are the 2s doubled; the 3s are the 2s plus one more group.
  3. 9s. The digits of each answer add up to 9 (18, 27, 36), which is easy to check.
  4. 6s. Double the 3s, or add one more group to the 5s.
  5. 7s and 8s. By now only a handful of facts are new, such as 7 × 8 = 56.

Practice one table a week with the multiplication chart, a times tables game and one drill sheet from the 3rd grade worksheets above, and review the older tables every Friday.

Fractions for the first time

The fraction pages in these third grade worksheets show that a fraction is a number, not just a slice of pizza. Start with unit fractions (one half, one third, one quarter) on fraction strips, then mark them on a number line between 0 and 1. Folding one paper strip into halves, then quarters, then eighths shows why 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 without any rules to memorise.

From learning to read to reading to learn

By third grade most children can decode, so the focus moves to understanding. Ask “How do you know?” after every answer and send them back to the sentence that proves it. The main idea organizer and the reading passages among the grade 3 worksheets above are built for exactly this, and a short daily read of a chapter book or a nonfiction magazine does more than any single worksheet.

Ready for 4th grade?

If these feel secure after a term of 3rd grade worksheets, try the 4th grade worksheets; if a few are shaky, the 2nd grade worksheets are good for review.

  • Answers any times table fact up to 10 × 10 in a few seconds.
  • Solves 56 ÷ 7 by thinking of the matching multiplication fact.
  • Shows 3/4 on a number line and explains why 2/4 = 1/2.
  • Writes a paragraph with a topic sentence and three supporting details.

Helping a third grader at home

  • Two minutes of facts a day. A quick flash card round at breakfast beats a long session at the weekend.
  • Talk through word problems. Ask what the question wants before any sums are done.
  • Measure real things. Work out the area of a rug or the perimeter of the garden with a tape measure.
  • Let them choose the book. Comics, sports facts and series books all count as reading.
  • Keep neat writing going. A few lines of cursive or careful print each week keeps handwriting improving.
  • Print a fresh copy. The free 3rd grade worksheets can be printed again with new numbers, so a tricky page can be practiced twice.

Activity sheets for 3rd graders

For activity sheets for 3rd graders, choose pages with a task beyond filling in a blank: the life cycle worksheets, the solar system worksheets, and the map and states pages for geography. Activity sheets for 3rd graders work best as a change of pace after a math page, in 15 to 20 minute sessions. Our 3rd graders worksheets also include reading comprehension passages with questions at the end of each passage.

Homework for 3rd graders: how much is enough?

Homework for 3rd graders is usually short. A common guideline is about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night, so treat the blocks below as part of the whole evening, not on top of it. For a third grader that means about 30 minutes in total, so a single math sheet plus reading is plenty. The table below turns that into a weekly plan:

Day Focus and where to print it Suggested block
Monday Math: times tables and multiplication 20 min
Tuesday Reading: comprehension passages 20 min
Wednesday Math: division or fractions 20 min
Thursday Language: grammar or spelling 20 min
Weekly total Four short sessions, with Friday free for games and reading for fun 80 min

Algebra for 3rd graders and science worksheets for 3rd graders

Algebra for 3rd graders is not a separate subject. The third grade standards call it operations and algebraic thinking: finding the unknown in 3 × ? = 24, and seeing patterns in the times tables. Practice it with the multiplication worksheets and the division worksheets. For science worksheets for 3rd graders, try the life cycle pages and the solar system worksheets.
