What 8th graders learn in math

The Common Core grade 8 math standards group the year into five domains:

Domain What students do Practice here
The number system (8.NS) Know that some numbers are irrational and approximate square roots Square root worksheets, Scientific notation calculator
Expressions and equations (8.EE) Use integer exponents, scientific notation, slope, linear equations and systems of equations Exponents, Scientific notation, Multi-step equations, Graph paper with x and y axes
Functions (8.F) Define, compare and graph linear functions Slope worksheets, Coordinate plane
Geometry (8.G) Transformations, congruence and similarity, the Pythagorean theorem, and volume of cylinders, cones and spheres Pythagorean theorem worksheets, Volume calculator
Statistics and probability (8.SP) Scatter plots, lines of best fit and two-way tables Graphing worksheets

Exponents and scientific notation

Scientific notation writes a number as a number from 1 up to 10 times a power of 10. Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is in front of it, and count the places you moved: left is a positive exponent, right is a negative exponent. Five examples:

Number Scientific notation
45,000 4.5 × 104
0.00032 3.2 × 10−4
6,200,000 6.2 × 106
0.0071 7.1 × 10−3
93,000,000 9.3 × 107

Use the scientific notation calculator to convert any number and check your answers.

Squares, cubes and roots: the numbers to know

Eighth graders should know the squares to 12 × 12 and the cubes to 12, plus the square roots of perfect squares, so that they can work with irrational numbers such as √2 and estimate where a root falls between two whole numbers (√40 is between 6 and 7):

n n² n³ √(n²)
1 1 1 1
2 4 8 2
3 9 27 3
4 16 64 4
5 25 125 5
6 36 216 6
7 49 343 7
8 64 512 8
9 81 729 9
10 100 1000 10
11 121 1331 11
12 144 1728 12

The Pythagorean theorem: six right triangles

In a right triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the longest side (the hypotenuse). These six triangles have whole-number sides, called Pythagorean triples. Notice that 6-8-10 and 9-12-15 are the 3-4-5 triangle scaled up:

Legs a and b a² + b² Hypotenuse c
3 and 4 25 5
5 and 12 169 13
8 and 15 289 17
7 and 24 625 25
6 and 8 100 10
9 and 12 225 15

For a triangle whose hypotenuse is not a whole number, such as legs of 2 and 3, c = √13, which is about 3.61.

Slope and linear equations

The slope of a line is how much y changes when x increases by 1. Find it from two points with (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁). A positive slope rises left to right, a negative slope falls, and a horizontal line has slope 0:

Two points Slope = rise ÷ run Slope
(1, 2) and (3, 8) (8 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) 3
(0, 5) and (4, 1) (1 − 5) ÷ (4 − 0) −1
(-2, -1) and (2, 7) (7 − -1) ÷ (2 − -2) 2
(3, 3) and (7, 3) (3 − 3) ÷ (7 − 3) 0
(-3, 4) and (-1, -2) (-2 − 4) ÷ (-1 − -3) −3

Print the graph paper with x and y axes to graph these lines, and practice the algebra with the two-step equations worksheets.

Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres

Eighth grade adds three volume formulas. A cone has one third the volume of a cylinder with the same base and height, and a sphere is two thirds of the cylinder that just fits around it. Three examples, using π from a calculator:

Shape Dimensions Formula Volume
Cylinder r = 3, h = 10 π × 3² × 10 282.7 cubic units
Cone r = 4, h = 9 ⅓ × π × 4² × 9 150.8 cubic units
Sphere r = 5 &frac43; × π × 5³ 523.6 cubic units

The volume calculator works out any of these and shows the steps.

Eighth grade math worksheets and grade 8 math worksheets

Families and teachers use many names for the same collection: eighth grade math worksheets, grade 8 math worksheets, math worksheets for 8th graders and printable 8th grade math worksheets. All of them lead to the practice on this page. The two-step equations sheets are PDFs for US Letter or A4, and 8th grade math worksheets with answers are what you get: each file ends with an answer key, so students can check their own work.

For 8th grade math practice that goes beyond a single sheet, use the Customize button to build a new set of problems, or use the worked examples and free calculators on this page. Practicing 8th grade math in short sessions, one skill at a time, works better than long catch-up sessions before a test.

A weekly plan for 8th grade math

Common mistakes in 8th grade math, and how to fix them

Most errors in grade 8 come from a handful of habits. Knowing them helps a parent or teacher spot the problem quickly:

Mistake Example Fix
Multiplying exponents when multiplying powers x² × x³ = x⁶ Add the exponents: x² × x³ = x⁵
Wrong sign on the exponent in scientific notation 0.0032 written as 3.2 × 10³ Moving the decimal right gives a negative exponent: 3.2 × 10−3
Putting run over rise Slope of (1, 2) to (3, 8) written as 2/6 Slope is rise over run: (8 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = 3
Adding the legs instead of their squares Legs 3 and 4 give c = 7 Square first: 9 + 16 = 25, then c = 5
Using the Pythagorean theorem on any triangle Applying a² + b² = c² to an acute triangle It only works for right triangles
Not distributing a negative sign 3 − (x + 2) = 3 − x + 2 Distribute to both terms: 3 − x − 2

An 8th grade math skills checklist

Use this checklist at the start and end of the year. A child who can tick every line is ready for Algebra 1 or Geometry:

  • Solve linear equations with variables on both sides.
  • Use the exponent rules for products, quotients and powers.
  • Write and compute with numbers in scientific notation.
  • Find the slope of a line from two points or a graph, and write y = mx + b.
  • Compare two linear functions given as a table, a graph or an equation.
  • Use the Pythagorean theorem to find a missing side or a distance.
  • Describe a reflection, rotation, translation and dilation.
  • Find the volume of a cylinder, a cone and a sphere.
  • Read a scatter plot and describe its association.
  • Estimate a square root and say whether a number is rational or irrational.

How to use these worksheets at home or in class

The worksheets above are the core 8th grade practice on this site, and the worked examples on this page cover exponents, scientific notation, slope, the Pythagorean theorem and volume. Work through one worked example, hide the answer column, solve the problem, then check.

Because eighth grade is cumulative, spend the first minutes of each session on a quick review of integers or percents from the earlier pages. A few mixed problems every week keep old skills fresh while new ones are learned.
