Hard Word Search Printable: 6 Free Puzzles With Answers

Hard word search printable: a girl with glasses circling a hidden word in a large word search grid

If a regular puzzle takes you two minutes, try a hard word search printable. Each of these six puzzles hides 30 words in a 22 by 22 grid, and the words run in all eight directions: left to right, right to left, up, down and along every diagonal. Words can cross and share letters, and the list is in alphabetical order, so it gives no clue about where to look. Every PDF has the puzzle on page 1 and a highlighted answer key on page 2. Every hard word search printable comes with answers.

What makes these hard word search puzzles hard?

Feature In these puzzles Why it is harder
Grid size 22 by 22 (484 letters) A typical kids puzzle uses 10 by 10 or 12 by 12.
Number of words 30 per puzzle Many words make it harder to keep track of what is left.
Directions All 8, including backwards and diagonal Backwards words are the ones eyes skip.
Word length From 3 to 13 letters Long words need a bigger scan, short words hide anywhere.
Overlap Words cross and share letters A word can sit inside another word’s letters.
Word list Alphabetical, no position hints Nothing tells you which direction to look.

How to solve a difficult word search faster

  1. Start with the longest words. A 12-letter word has fewer places to hide, and finding it cuts down the grid.
  2. Hunt for rare letters. Look for Q, Z, X, K and J first. Then check the letters around them for the start of a word.
  3. Scan for first letters. Pick one word, find every copy of its first letter and check all eight directions around each one.
  4. Check backwards. If a word is not where you expect it, read the grid from right to left and from bottom to top.
  5. Cross out as you go. Mark the word list, so that you do not search for words you have already found.
  6. Use the answer key last. If three or four words are missing, peek at the answer page for one clue, not for every word.

Hard word search for adults and older children

The puzzles are written for older children (about grade 4 and up), teens and adults who enjoy a challenge. They are also a good fit for early finishers, library programs, retirement-home activity hours and quiet evenings. Teachers can use the science, weather and ocean puzzles as vocabulary warm-ups: ask students to find a word, then use it in a sentence or explain what it means.

Wikipedia’s article on the word search says the puzzle was published by Norman E. Gibat in the Selenby Digest on 1 March 1968, and adds that the Spanish puzzle creator Pedro Ocón de Oro was publishing “sopas de letras” before that date. The Spanish article on sopa de letras credits Ocón de Oro as its inventor. Either way, the puzzle you hold today is a descendant of a game that is more than 50 years old.

Hard word search printable tips

  • Print on US Letter or A4 at 100 percent size so that the letters stay readable.
  • Use a pencil for finding words, and a highlighter once you are sure of a word.
  • Print page 2 separately on a second sheet to keep the answers out of sight.
  • If the letters are small for you, enlarge the page to 110 percent on a larger sheet of paper.

How these puzzles are made

Each puzzle is generated by a program. It places the 30 words one at a time in a random direction, allowing two words to cross only where they share the same letter, and then fills the empty squares with random letters. The answer key is drawn from the same placements, so every highlighted word is really in the grid. The word lists were written for this page and every word is a common English word.
