Gazetted holidays 2027: how the list works

The Government of India publishes its holiday list each year for Central Government offices. It has three parts:

  • National holidays: Republic Day (January 26), Independence Day (August 15) and Mahatma Gandhi’s Jayanti (October 2) are observed across the whole country.
  • Compulsory gazetted holidays: 14 holidays in all, adding festivals of every major faith, such as Diwali, Dussehra, Id-ul-Fitr, Christmas, Guru Nanak’s Jayanti, Buddha Purnima and Mahavir Jayanti.
  • Optional holidays: three more days chosen in each state capital from a longer list that includes Holi, Janmashtami, Ram Navami and Maha Shivaratri, plus two restricted holidays that each employee can pick.

Banks follow the Reserve Bank of India’s list for each state, and schools follow their state education department, so always check the local list as well. Wikipedia’s public holidays in India article compares the holidays observed in each state.

Holiday list 2027 India: month by month

  • January to March: Republic Day parade in New Delhi on January 26, then Maha Shivaratri, Id-ul-Fitr and Holi close together in March, with Good Friday on March 26.
  • April and May: a busy spring with Ambedkar Jayanti, Ram Navami and Mahavir Jayanti in April, and Bakrid and Buddha Purnima in May.
  • June to August: Muharram in June, then Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi both expected on Sunday, August 15, and Janmashtami on August 25.
