The bubble letters are drawn in your browser from our own letter shapes. Nothing you type is sent or saved.

The preview shows each page exactly as it will print, so you can see where lines break before you use any ink. Fill one page makes the letters as big as they can be while every word stays whole. The fixed heights, from 1 to 6 inches, keep the same size from page to page, which is what you want for a banner. Pick white as the fill color for a version to color in.

What are bubble letters?

Bubble letters are a lettering style in which each letter is drawn as a thick, rounded outline with soft ends and small inner holes, so the word looks inflated. They are easy to read from a distance, easy to color, and forgiving to draw by hand, which is why they turn up on posters, notebooks and classroom walls.

The style comes from New York graffiti. The aerosol artist Phase 2 is generally credited with originating the bubble letter style, which writers also called “softies”. He first used an early version of it in late 1972, and other writers soon copied and changed it. In graffiti today, large and quickly painted bubble lettering is called a throw-up, and it can be filled in or left hollow, just like the outline and filled styles in the generator.

The letters on this page are our own drawings, not a font. Each one starts as a simple stick letter, the same skeleton a child learns to write, which is then puffed out evenly on every side. That is why the A has a pointed hole, the B has two slots and the O has an oval center: the holes are the spaces the stick letter leaves inside.

How big should the letters be?

For most posters, 3 inch letters are a good choice: about 4 capitals fit across a landscape US Letter page and they read clearly across a classroom. Smaller heights fit more letters in a row, and the table shows what to expect with the generator set to Puffy and normal spacing.

Scale drawing of a capital B in bubble letters at 1, 2, 3 and 4 inches tall on a landscape US Letter page, with how many capitals fit in one row
Letter height Capitals in a row, Letter portrait Capitals in a row, Letter landscape Rows per page (portrait / landscape) Good for
1 in (2.5 cm) about 10 about 14 9 / 6 Name tags, labels, cards
1.5 in (3.8 cm) about 6 about 9 6 / 4 Greeting cards, jar and bin labels
2 in (5.1 cm) about 5 about 6 4 / 3 Door signs, desk name plates
3 in (7.6 cm) about 3 about 4 3 / 2 Posters, bulletin board titles
4 in (10.2 cm) about 2 about 3 2 / 1 Hallway and party signs
6 in (15.2 cm) about 1 about 2 1 / 1 Banners, a few letters per page

The counts are for capital letters with 0.5 inch margins. Wide letters such as M and W take more room than I or L, so a real word can fit one more or one fewer. A US Letter sheet is 8.5 by 11 inches and an A4 sheet is 210 by 297 mm, so A4 is a little narrower and taller. On A4 the counts stay within one letter of the US Letter numbers above. Choosing Slim in the generator fits more letters in a row; Extra puffy fits fewer.

How to use bubble letters

Use bubble letters anywhere a word has to be seen from across a room or colored in by a child. These are the jobs they do best:

  • Posters: make the title of a school project or science fair board in 3 inch letters with the 3D shadow style, then glue it across the top.
  • Signs: a door sign such as “Quiet please” or “Lemonade $1” fits on one landscape page with Fill one page.
  • Name tags: set the height to 1 inch, type each name on its own line, and five or six short names print on one landscape page (five when a name has a tail letter such as g or y). Cut them apart and add a safety pin or tape.
  • Classroom displays: print the poster pack for a bulletin board title, a word wall header or a letter of the week. Children can color their letter before it goes up.
  • Birthday and party banners: type the message, choose 6 inch letters and landscape, and each page holds one to three letters to string on ribbon.
  • Notebook covers and lockers: save a name as a transparent PNG and print it on sticker paper, or drop it into a slide or a document.

Ideas to try

The fun part of bubble letters is filling them in. With a white printout you can try any of these:

  1. Two-color shading: color the whole letter light, then add a darker stripe along the bottom and right edges so it looks round.
  2. Doodle fills: fill each letter with a different pattern, such as dots, zigzags, hearts, stars or tiny flowers, like the A to M coloring page.
  3. Rainbow word: give every letter the next color of the rainbow, in order from red to violet.
  4. Ombré fade: start dark on the first letter and get lighter letter by letter.
  5. Cut-out collage: print the poster pack, cut out the letters and fill them with scraps of magazine or wrapping paper.
  6. Letter hunt: hide poster pack letters around the room and have children find the ones in their name.

Printing and cutting tips

  1. Print at actual size. In the print window, choose 100% or Actual size, not Fit, so a 3 inch letter really prints 3 inches tall.
  2. Use card stock for anything that hangs. Thin paper curls on a wall; heavier paper stays flat and survives being pinned up.
  3. Cut just outside the black line. Leaving the outline on keeps the letter crisp against a colored background.
  4. Cut the holes last. Poke scissors through the middle of the A, B, D, O, P, Q and R holes and trim outward, or simply color them in.
  5. Line up a banner on the floor first. Lay all the pages out in order and check the spelling before you punch holes or tape.

Use the bubble letters for posters, birthday banners and classroom displays.

Frequently asked questions

8 quick answers

Is the generator free, and is my text private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and the letters are drawn in your browser. What you type is not sent to us or saved.

Which characters can I use?

A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9 and the marks . , ! ? ’ " – : ; ( ) & + = / # $ * and a heart. Accented letters print without the accent, and other symbols are skipped with a note.

How do I make one giant letter per page?

Type the letter, keep Fill one page, and choose Portrait. For a whole word, choose 6 inch letters and portrait, and the generator puts one letter on most pages; only a narrow letter such as I shares a page. The poster pack already has A to Z.

Can I make a version to color in?

Yes. Choose the white fill color. Outline gives plain letters, and the 3D shadow, polka dots and stripes print as black lines you can color.

Why did my word split onto two lines?

At a fixed height, a long word can be wider than the page. Choose a smaller height or landscape, or use Fill one page, which never splits a word.

Can I use the PNG in my own projects?

Yes. Pictures you make with the generator are yours to use in classroom materials, cards, invitations and school projects.

What does Join overlapping letters do?

Normally each letter keeps its own outline, so overlapping letters look stacked. Join overlapping letters draws one outline around the whole word, so touching letters merge into one shape.

What is included in the printable bubble letters alphabet?

There is one page of capitals A to Z, one page of small letters a to z with tails below the line, a page of numbers and punctuation, and a 26-page poster pack with one giant capital per page. All are black and white, in US Letter and A4.
