Mean median mode worksheets teach the measures of center and spread that describe a set of numbers. These free printable worksheets cover finding the mean, median, mode and range, and then solving for a missing number when the mean is known. Every PDF has an answer key, and the maker below creates new data sets in seconds.
Quick answer: The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value of the ordered data, the mode is the most frequent value, and the range is the highest minus the lowest. For 4, 8, 6, 5, 3, 8, 6 the mean is about 5.7, the median is 6, the mode is 6 and 8, and the range is 5. This page has 7 free mean median mode worksheets (PDF) with answer keys, plus a maker. How to find the mean, median, mode and range
- Mean: add all the values and divide by how many there are.
- Median: order the values, then take the middle one (or the average of the two middle values).
- Mode: find the value that appears most often. A set can have no mode or more than one.
- Range: subtract the lowest value from the highest.
Mean median mode and range worksheet: worked examples
Each row shows one data set and all four measures. Cover the answers and try each one first:
| Data set | Mean | Median | Mode | Range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4, 8, 6, 5, 3, 8, 6 | 5.71 | 6 | 6, 8 | 5 |
| 10, 12, 9, 15, 12 | 11.6 | 12 | 12 | 6 |
| 2, 7, 7, 4, 5, 9, 7, 3 | 5.5 | 6 | 7 | 7 |
| 21, 18, 25, 30, 18, 22 | 22.33 | 21.5 | 18 | 12 |
| 5, 5, 6, 6, 8 | 6 | 6 | 5, 6 | 3 |
| 14, 3, 9, 11, 7, 12 | 9.33 | 10 | none | 11 |
Which measure should you use?
The mean is affected by outliers, values far from the rest, while the median is not. When a data set has an outlier, the median is often a better description of the typical value:
| Data set | Mean | Median | Which measure describes the typical value? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3, 4, 4, 5, 6 | 4.4 | 4 | Either: there is no outlier |
| 3, 4, 4, 5, 60 | 15.2 | 4 | Median: the outlier 60 pulls the mean up |
| $40, $42, $45, $48, $400 | $115 | $45 | Median: one very large price skews the mean |
| 90, 92, 95, 98, 100 | 95 | 95 | Either: the data are symmetric |
Finding the mean worksheet and median worksheet
A finding the mean worksheet is the best starting point because it needs only addition and division. A median worksheet adds one more skill, putting the numbers in order first, and it introduces the rule for an even number of values. If students mix them up, ask them which one is the middle and which one is the fair share.
Missing number mean worksheet
To find a missing value when the mean is known, multiply the mean by the number of values to get the total needed, then subtract the known values:
| Known scores | Target mean | Total needed | Missing score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 78, 85, 90 | 85 (4 scores) | 340 | 87 |
| 6, 8, 9, 5 | 7 (5 values) | 35 | 7 |
| 12, 15, 18 | 16 (4 values) | 64 | 19 |
| 70, 80 | 80 (3 scores) | 240 | 90 |

Mean median mode worksheets for grades 6 and 7
Mean median mode worksheets appear in the grade 6 statistics unit and again in grade 7 when students compare two data sets. Teachers use mean median mode worksheets to introduce the vocabulary, and they use the harder mean median mode worksheets, with a missing value, to test understanding.
When you assign mean median mode worksheets, ask students to say in a sentence what each measure tells them. Mean median mode worksheets are most useful when the numbers come from something real, such as quiz scores or temperatures, so that the answers mean something.
How to use these mean median mode worksheets
Use the mean median mode worksheets in order. Start with the mean sheets, then the median, then mode and range, and finish with all four together and the missing number sheet. Every one of the mean median mode worksheets has an answer key on the last page, so students can check their own work, and review is a good source of quick retests.
Once students can find all four measures, ask which one best describes each data set. Print a mean median mode worksheet for homework and review it together the next day. Students who need more mean median mode worksheets can generate a new set in the maker, and mean median mode worksheets with fresh numbers make a reliable weekly check.
Mean, median and mode vocabulary
Students answer questions faster when they know the words. These are the terms used on the worksheets and answer keys:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mean | The sum of the values divided by how many there are | (4 + 6 + 8) ÷ 3 = 6 |
| Median | The middle value of ordered data | 5 in 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 |
| Mode | The most frequent value | 4 in 3, 4, 4, 6 |
| Range | The highest value minus the lowest | 9 − 2 = 7 |
| Outlier | A value far from the rest | 60 in 3, 4, 4, 5, 60 |
| Data set | A collection of numbers or values | 4, 8, 6, 5 |
Common Core standards for mean, median and mode
These worksheets practice the Common Core statistics and probability standards for grades 6 and 7:
| Grade | Standard | What students do |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 6 | 6.SP.A.3 | Recognize that a measure of center summarizes all values with a single number |
| Grade 6 | 6.SP.B.5c | Give quantitative measures of center (median and mean) and variability (range) |
| Grade 7 | 7.SP.B.4 | Use measures of center and variability to compare two populations |
Common mistakes with mean, median and mode
| Mistake | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Not ordering the data for the median | Median of 7, 2, 9, 4, 5 taken as 9 | Order first: 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, so the median is 5 |
| Forgetting to average the middle pair | Median of 2, 4, 6, 8 taken as 4 | Average the two middle values: (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5 |
| Saying the mode is the biggest number | Mode of 3, 5, 5, 8 taken as 8 | The mode is the most frequent value: 5 |
| Dividing by the wrong count | Mean of 4 values divided by 3 | Divide the sum by how many values there are |
| Mixing up range and mean | Range = (max + min) ÷ 2 | Range = max − min |
Real-life uses of mean, median and mode
Averages describe the data we meet every day:
| Situation | Measure | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Average test score for a class | Mean | Uses every score |
| Typical home price in a city | Median | A few very expensive homes would raise the mean |
| Most popular shoe size sold | Mode | The store needs the most frequent size |
| Spread between hottest and coldest day | Range | Shows how much the temperature varied |
| Score needed on the next test to reach an average of 85 | Mean (missing number) | Work backward from the target total |
Which mean median mode worksheet should you start with?
Start with the mean, then the median, then mode and range. Level 5 is the most challenging. Set B gives a retest for levels 1 and 2.
