First letter sounds
Beginning sounds worksheets teach children to hear the first sound in a word and match it to a letter. Each free printable page shows eight pictures and three letter choices for each one. Children say the picture name, listen for the first sound and circle the letter. Every PDF has an answer key, and the maker above builds a set for any letters you choose.
Quick answer: Beginning sounds, also called initial sounds, are the first sounds in spoken words: the beginning sound of moon is /m/. Hearing and matching beginning sounds to letters is a key kindergarten skill. This page has 7 free beginning sounds worksheets (PDF) with answer keys and a maker. Updated October 2026.

What are beginning sounds?
Every spoken word is a string of sounds called phonemes. The beginning sound is the first one. Because it is the easiest sound to hear, it is the first sound children learn to isolate, before the ending and middle sounds. Matching a beginning sound to a letter links spoken language to print, which is the start of phonics.

Hard and soft sounds, and tricky letters
A few letters do not follow the simple rule of one letter, one sound. Introduce these after the first sounds are secure, and use the clear examples:
| Letter | Two sounds | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| C | Hard /k/ and soft /s/ | cat, cup and city, cent |
| G | Hard /g/ and soft /j/ | goat, gift and giraffe, gym |
| S | /s/ and sometimes /z/ | sun, sock and nose, is |
| Y | Consonant /y/ and vowel sounds | yo-yo and happy, my |
| X | Rarely at the start of a word | x-ray, xylophone; box, fox end with x |
| Q | Always with u, sounds like /kw/ | queen, quilt |
Which beginning sounds to teach first
Many programs teach letter sounds in a set order that lets children build words quickly. This order is common, and the first group has its own worksheet:
| Group | Letters | Why this group |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | S, A, T, P, I, N | Make many simple words such as sat, pin and tap |
| 2 | C, K, E, H, R, M, D | Add more consonants and the vowel e |
| 3 | G, O, U, L, F, B | Complete most of the common short sounds |
| 4 | J, Z, W, V, Y, X, Q | Less frequent letters last |
Beginning sounds activities

| Confusing letters that sound alike | b and p; d and t | Feel the mouth: lips pop for /b/ and /p/, voice on /b/ |

How to use these beginning sounds worksheets
Use the beginning sounds worksheets after children can name most letters. Start with the S, A, T, P, I, N sheet, which has the six letters most programs teach first. Say each picture name aloud together, stretch the first sound, and let the child circle the letter. Work through the A to H, I to P and Q to Z beginning sounds worksheets over several weeks, then use the all-letters sheet as a check.
Keep sessions short, no more than ten minutes, and celebrate progress. If a letter is difficult, go back to a sound game for a few days before returning to the beginning sounds worksheets. The answer key lets you check work quickly, and Set B uses a different mix of letters for a retest.
