Addition worksheets grade 2 and every other grade

Grade What children practice Settings to use
Kindergarten Adding within 5 and within 10 with objects and fingers Sums up to 10, large print
Grade 1 Addition facts within 20, fluent within 10 Single-digit facts
Grade 2 All single-digit facts from memory; 2-digit addition within 100; adding up to four 2-digit numbers 2-digit with regrouping, three 2-digit numbers
Grade 3 Adding within 1,000 fluently 3-digit addition
Grade 4 Multi-digit addition with the standard algorithm 4-digit with regrouping

Grades follow the Common Core math standards, for example 1.OA.C.6 (add within 20), 2.NBT.B.5 (add within 100), 2.NBT.B.6 (add up to four two-digit numbers), 3.NBT.A.2 (add within 1,000) and 4.NBT.B.4 (multi-digit addition). Each link opens the generator on this page with those settings.

Addition worksheets with regrouping (carrying)

Regrouping, also called carrying, happens when a column adds up to 10 or more. Take 47 + 38:

  1. Add the ones: 7 + 8 = 15. Write 5 in the ones column and carry the 1 ten to the tens column.
  2. Add the tens: 4 + 3 + 1 carried = 8.
  3. The answer is 85.

Addition without regrouping (for example 42 + 35) never has a column over 9, which is why it comes first. Choose No carrying or borrowing for beginners, Mixed for practice, and Every problem needs it to focus on regrouping. The generator checks every column of every problem, so the setting is always followed.

Double digit addition worksheets: how many problems carry?

The “Carrying” setting decides how many problems need regrouping. If you choose “Mixed”, the generator picks the two numbers at random, so the share of problems that carry depends on the size of the numbers. This table is counted from every possible pair of numbers, using the generator’s own rule that a problem carries when any column adds up to 10 or more:

Problem type Possible pairs of numbers Pairs that need regrouping Share with “Mixed” Share with “No carrying” Share with “Every problem”
1-digit + 1-digit 100 45 45% 0% 100%
2-digit + 2-digit 8,100 6,120 76% 0% 100%
3-digit + 3-digit 810,000 701,100 87% 0% 100%

So in double digit addition worksheets on the “Mixed” setting, about 76% of the problems carry, and with 3-digit numbers about 87%. That is why “Mixed” is a good setting for practice, and “Every problem needs it” is better when a child needs extra work on carrying. A set with 1-digit facts is different: only 45% of single-digit pairs add up to 10 or more.

How many addition facts are there to learn?

There are 100 ordered pairs of single-digit numbers, from 0 + 0 to 9 + 9. But addition can be done in either order, so 3 + 8 and 8 + 3 are the same fact, which leaves 55 facts to learn. Children who know that the order does not matter have almost half as much to memorize. Three strategies cover most of them:

Doubles Near doubles (one more) Make ten
1 + 1 = 2 1 + 2 = 3 1 + 9 = 10
2 + 2 = 4 2 + 3 = 5 2 + 8 = 10
3 + 3 = 6 3 + 4 = 7 3 + 7 = 10
4 + 4 = 8 4 + 5 = 9 4 + 6 = 10
5 + 5 = 10 5 + 6 = 11 5 + 5 = 10

Doubles are easy to remember, a near double is one more than the double, and the make-ten facts are the building blocks of regrouping. For more strategies, see the addition strategies for kids guide, and for the history of the operation see Wikipedia’s addition article.

Free printable addition worksheets: how to choose the setting

  1. Pick the digits. Start with one digit for facts, two digits for column addition, and three or four digits for the standard algorithm.
  2. Pick the carrying. Use “No carrying” first, then “Mixed”, then “Every problem needs it”.
  3. Pick the layout. Vertical problems teach columns, and horizontal problems teach mental math.
  4. Pick the number of problems. Twenty problems suit a classroom page, thirty suit a fact drill, and one hundred make a five-minute drill.
  5. Print a different version. You can print up to five versions with the same settings, so neighbors cannot copy.

Types of addition worksheets you can print

  • Addition facts: single-digit problems for fact fluency, with an optional timed drill box.
  • Double-digit addition with or without regrouping.
  • 3-digit and 4-digit column addition for the standard algorithm.
  • Adding 3 or 4 numbers in a column.
  • Horizontal addition (47 + 38 = ___) for mental math.
  • Missing addend (47 + ☐ = 85) to link addition with subtraction.
  • Mixed addition and subtraction on one page.

Tips for teaching addition

  • Use objects, a number line or ten frames before worksheets for young children.
  • Teach “make 10” facts (7 + 3, 6 + 4) early; they make carrying easy later.
  • Ask children to say “carry the ten” aloud, so they understand the 1 is really 10.
  • Use graph paper or the neat columns on these sheets to keep digits lined up.
  • Mix in a few missing-addend problems so children think, not just follow steps.

Addition table: sums from 0 to 10

An addition table, also called an addition chart, lists every sum of two numbers. Find the row of the first number and the column of the second, and the sum is where they meet. Addition tables help children see patterns: every row goes up by one, and the table is the same on both sides of the diagonal because 3 + 7 is 7 + 3. Print this addition table for kindergarten and first grade, or use addition tables as a quick check when a child is stuck on a fact.

The table shows how many ways there are to make each sum, which is why 9 is easy to find and 18 is rare:
