What is place value?
Place value is the idea that a digit’s value depends on where it sits in a number. In 347, the 3 means 3 hundreds (300), the 4 means 4 tens (40) and the 7 means 7 ones. Understanding this is what makes adding with regrouping, rounding and multiplying larger numbers make sense.
Place value by grade
| Grade | What children practice |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 | Two-digit numbers as tens and ones (1.NBT.B.2) |
| Grade 2 | Three-digit numbers as hundreds, tens and ones; expanded form and number names (2.NBT.A.1, 2.NBT.A.3) |
| Grade 4 | Multi-digit numbers to 1,000,000 in standard form, word form and expanded form (4.NBT.A.2) |
Ways to show a number
- Base-ten blocks: flats for hundreds, rods for tens and small cubes for ones.
- Expanded form: 347 = 300 + 40 + 7.
- Word form: three hundred forty-seven.
- Standard form: 347.
What is in the place value worksheets
There are 21 place value worksheets in three sets, each with an answer key:
- Tens and ones (Grade 1, 7 worksheets)
- Hundreds, tens and ones (Grade 2, 8 worksheets)
- Thousands and large numbers (Grade 4, 6 worksheets)
Tens and ones worksheets: the first place value
Tens and ones worksheets teach that a two-digit number is made of groups of ten and some ones. The number 47 is 4 tens and 7 ones, which is 40 + 7. Children first see this with objects bundled in tens, and then with numerals. The Common Core expects first graders to understand that the two digits of a two-digit number stand for tens and ones (1.NBT.B.2). The place value worksheets grade 2 go up to hundreds.
Place value worksheets: the names of the places
Each place is ten times the value of the place to its right. This is why the number system is called base ten, and why a zero is needed to hold an empty place. These are the first eight places:
| Place | Value of one unit | Zeros |
|---|---|---|
| Ones | 1 | 0 |
| Tens | 10 | 1 |
| Hundreds | 100 | 2 |
| Thousands | 1,000 | 3 |
| Ten thousands | 10,000 | 4 |
| Hundred thousands | 100,000 | 5 |
| Millions | 1,000,000 | 6 |
| Billions | 1,000,000,000 | 9 |
In the international system, digits are grouped in threes with commas, so 1,234,567 is read “one million, two hundred thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven”. The Indian system groups the first three digits, and then twos, so the same number is written 12,34,567 and is read “twelve lakh, thirty-four thousand, five hundred sixty-seven”. The place value chart generator can print charts for both. For more on the idea, see Wikipedia’s article on positional notation.
Expanded form worksheets
Expanded form writes a number as a sum of the value of each digit. Expanded form worksheets show that each digit is worth its place, and that a zero adds nothing, so zeros are left out of the sum. Four examples with the number words:
| Number | Expanded form | Words |
|---|---|---|
| 347 | 300 + 40 + 7 | three hundred forty-seven |
| 4,052 | 4,000 + 50 + 2 | four thousand fifty-two |
| 60,301 | 60,000 + 300 + 1 | sixty thousand three hundred one |
| 98,765 | 90,000 + 8,000 + 700 + 60 + 5 | ninety-eight thousand seven hundred sixty-five |
Base ten blocks worksheets: flats, rods and cubes
Base ten blocks make place value visible. A small cube is 1, a rod of ten cubes is 10, a flat of ten rods is 100, and a large cube is 1,000. Base ten blocks worksheets ask children to draw or count the blocks for a number, or to write the number for a picture of blocks. The table shows how many blocks it takes to build five numbers:
| Number | Flats (100) | Rods (10) | Cubes (1) | Blocks in all |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 347 | 3 | 4 | 7 | 14 |
| 205 | 2 | 0 | 5 | 7 |
| 99 | 0 | 9 | 9 | 18 |
| 468 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 18 |
| 999 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 27 |
You can build any number with the blocks, and the number 999 takes 27 blocks, which is the most for a three-digit number. For virtual blocks, use the base ten blocks tool.
Some surprising facts about three-digit numbers
Place value is a good tool for counting. Because every three-digit number has a hundreds digit from 1 to 9, and a tens and a ones digit from 0 to 9, there are 9 × 10 × 10 = 900 of them. This table answers some questions about them:
| Question about the 900 three-digit numbers | Count |
|---|---|
| How many have at least one zero? | 171 |
| How many have no zero? | 729 |
| How many have three different digits? | 648 |
| How many read the same backwards (palindromes)? | 90 |
| How many have a hundreds digit of 7? | 100 |
Children can check these with the place value rule: the numbers with no zero have 9 choices for each of the three digits, which is 9 × 9 × 9 = 729.
Rounding with place value
To round to a place, look at the digit to its right. If it is 5 or more, round up. Rounding is a use of place value, because you decide using the next place down. The table shows four numbers rounded to three places:
| Number | Nearest ten | Nearest hundred | Nearest thousand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,346 | 1,350 | 1,300 | 1,000 |
| 2,750 | 2,750 | 2,800 | 3,000 |
| 4,999 | 5,000 | 5,000 | 5,000 |
| 8,505 | 8,510 | 8,500 | 9,000 |
Notice that 4,999 rounds to 5,000 at the thousands place, and also at the hundreds place. Place value worksheets for grade 3 and 4 use rounding to estimate sums and differences (3.NBT.A.1, 4.NBT.A.3).
Face value and place value
These worksheets ask a child to find the value of a digit, which is its face value (the digit itself) times its place. The table shows the difference: the face value of the 4 in 347 is 4, but its place value is 40.
| Number | Digit | Face value (the digit) | Place | Place value (what it is worth) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 347 | 4 | 4 | tens | 40 |
| 4,052 | 5 | 5 | tens | 50 |
| 60,301 | 6 | 6 | ten thousands | 60,000 |
| 98,765 | 8 | 8 | thousands | 8,000 |
| 1,206 | 2 | 2 | hundreds | 200 |
| 805 | 0 | 0 | tens | 0 |
Notice the last row: a 0 has a face value and a place value of 0 wherever it sits, but it is needed to hold the place, so that 805 is not 85.
Identifying place value: sample questions
Identifying place value worksheets ask the same kinds of questions again and again with new numbers, which is why a generator helps. Here are six sample questions with answers, a quick review you can use as a warm-up:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the value of the 6 in 4,862? | 60 (6 tens) |
| Which digit is in the thousands place of 7,314? | 7 |
| Write 5 hundreds + 3 tens + 2 ones as a number. | 532 |
| What is 4,000 + 300 + 7 as a number? | 4,307 |
| What is the place value of the 9 in 91,250? | ten thousands |
| Which is greater, 4,709 or 4,790? | 4,790 (7 tens is more than 0 tens) |

Activity sheets and handouts
For sheets that go on a desk, use the hundreds, tens and ones sheets in the gallery above. For an activity sheet, use the base ten blocks sheets: children draw or count the blocks and write the number. A handout can be a single page, such as our printable place value chart: print a few and put them in a folder for the year. Activity sheets work best after children have built the number with real objects or with our virtual base ten blocks.
Free to print, with answer keys
Every worksheet here is free, with a version for each grade. Open a sheet, choose US Letter or A4, then print or save the PDF. No account is needed, and every sheet has an answer key. Practice sheets are most effective when they are short: about ten numbers, ten minutes.
Using place value to round and add
Place value and rounding go together, as the table in the previous section shows: you look at the place to the right to decide whether to round up. Adding place value worksheets teach the same idea from another angle: to add 346 + 252, add the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones. That is why the addition worksheets and subtraction worksheets sections of this site rely on place value too.

Frequently asked questions
5 quick answers
Why is place value important?
Every written method for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing depends on lining up and trading between places, such as swapping 10 ones for 1 ten.
What does a zero mean in a number?
A zero holds a place that has nothing in it. In 406 there are no tens, so the tens place holds a 0 and the expanded form is 400 + 6.
Where can I find free place value worksheets as PDFs?
Open any worksheet in the gallery above or on a topic page, choose US Letter or A4, then print or save the PDF. All 21 are free, with answer keys.
What is the difference between face value and place value?
Face value is the digit itself. Place value is what the digit is worth in its place: in 347, the 4 has a face value of 4 and a place value of 40.
Which grade learns place value?
Place value is taught from grade 1 (tens and ones), through grade 2 (hundreds) and grade 4 (numbers to 1,000,000), with decimal place value in grade 5.
