These number writing practice worksheets cover 0 to 100 in six sets, from the first six numbers to the numbers up to one hundred.

Number writing practice: how to write each numeral
Good habits start with the first ten numerals. Say the direction aloud as the child writes: start at the top for most numbers, and go down before going across:
| Numeral | How to write it |
|---|---|
| 0 | Start at the top and go around to the left, back to the start |
| 1 | Start at the top and pull straight down |
| 2 | Around like a hook, slant down to the left, then across the bottom |
| 3 | Around to the middle, then around again to the bottom |
| 4 | Down, across, then a second line straight down through it |
| 5 | Down, around the belly, then add the flat hat on top |
| 6 | Curve down from the top and close the loop at the bottom |
| 7 | Across the top, then slant down |
| 8 | Make an S, then slant back up to where you started |
| 9 | A small loop at the top, then a straight line down |
Writing numbers worksheets: how many digits does a child write?
Writing the numbers from 1 to 100 means writing 192 digits in all. We counted every digit:
| Digit | Times it is written from 1 to 100 |
|---|---|
| 0 | 11 |
| 1 | 21 |
| 2 | 20 |
| 3 | 20 |
| 4 | 20 |
| 5 | 20 |
| 6 | 20 |
| 7 | 20 |
| 8 | 20 |
| 9 | 20 |
| All digits | 192 |
The digit 1 appears most often, 21 times, because it is in 10 to 19, in every number ending in 1, and in 100. The digit 0 appears 11 times. That is why the first sheets focus on 0 to 10: they cover all ten digits that every other number is built from.
Number words: the longest are not the biggest
Writing the number word as well as the numeral is good reading and spelling practice. The longest number words from 1 to 100 are not the largest numbers:
| Number | Number word | Letters |
|---|---|---|
| 73 | seventy-three | 12 |
| 77 | seventy-seven | 12 |
| 78 | seventy-eight | 12 |
| 23 | twenty-three | 11 |
| 27 | twenty-seven | 11 |
| 28 | twenty-eight | 11 |

Numbers that children mix up
Writing numerals backwards is normal at this age. These are the common mix-ups, with a trick for each:
| Number | Common mix-up | A trick |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Written as a backwards 2 or confused with 5 | The 2 has a swan neck and a flat base |
| 3 | Written as an epsilon, backwards 3 | Two bumps on the right, like a bottom lip and top lip |
| 5 | The hat is missed or written backwards | Write the body first, then add the hat |
| 6 and 9 | Confused, because one is the other turned upside down | 6 starts at the top; 9 starts with a circle |
| 7 | Written without the top bar | Across the top, then slant down |
| teen numbers | 14 written as 41 | Say ten and four while writing: 1 then 4 |

Printing number writing sheets
Print on US Letter or A4 at 100% scale. The sheets with larger ranges, such as 51 to 100, have several pages, so print a few pages at a time. For a child who finds writing hard, trace the numbers with a finger first, and use a sheet protector and dry-erase marker to practice again.
Number writing practice for different ages
Three year olds are usually happy to trace the numbers 0 to 5, and many four year olds can trace 0 to 10. By five or six, most children can write the numbers 1 to 20 without a model, which is a kindergarten goal. The larger ranges, 21 to 50 and 51 to 100, suit first graders and children who enjoy numbers, and are good practice for the teen numbers and the tens words.
From writing numbers to counting
Writing a number is only half the skill: the child also needs to know how many it means. After tracing a number, count out that many objects, make that many tally marks, or fill that many boxes on a ten frame. Linking the numeral to the quantity is the key idea of early number sense, and a few minutes a day helps more than a long session once a week.
