UK bank holidays 2027: substitute days
When one of the UK bank holidays 2027 falls on a weekend, a substitute day is given on the next working day. Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday, so England and Wales get Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28 off. In Scotland, January 2 is a Saturday, so the extra New Year holiday moves to Monday, January 4. New Year’s Day 2028 is also a Saturday, which means the first bank holiday of 2028 is the substitute on Monday, January 3, 2028.
Do UK bank holidays 2027 give you the right to a day off?
Not automatically. Workers in the UK, including those who get the 2027 bank holidays England and Wales share, are entitled to at least 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave, and employers may count bank holidays as part of it, so your right to a bank holiday depends on your contract. There is also no automatic right to extra pay for working one.
