6th grade worksheets by subject
Math worksheets for 6th graders
The math worksheets follow the Common Core grade 6 standards for ratios, the number system and expressions and equations. For the full list with worked examples, tables and calculators, see the 6th grade math worksheets page. Print the integer sheets first if your child is new to negative numbers, then move to the ratios and proportions worksheets.
Reading worksheets for 6th graders
The 5th and 6th grade reading comprehension worksheets have passages with questions for grades 5 and 6, and the graphic organizers (story map, main idea, Venn diagram) help students plan a summary. A good routine is to read a passage, underline the main idea and answer the questions without looking back, then check the answers against the text.
Science worksheets for 6th graders
The periodic table worksheets pages include a color-coded table, a blank table to fill in, and a quiz. Students learn the 118 elements and how the table is organized into groups and periods, which links to the chemistry they meet in middle school science.
What 6th graders learn in each subject
Sixth grade is the first year of middle school in many districts, and students meet more subjects, more reading and more independent work. This table shows the main skills by subject and where to practice them on this site:
| Subject | What 6th graders work on | Practice here |
|---|---|---|
| Math | Ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers, exponents, one-step equations, area and volume, statistics | 6th grade math worksheets |
| Reading | Finding the main idea, citing evidence, comparing two texts, and summarizing | Reading comprehension worksheets |
| Writing and grammar | Paragraphs with evidence, varied sentences, and the parts of speech | Grammar worksheets |
| Science | Matter and the periodic table, plus life, earth and physical science units | Periodic table worksheets |
| Social studies | Maps, regions and world geography | Continents and oceans |
Five worked examples from 6th grade math
Each of these problems is typical of what 6th graders see. Try them first, then check the answers:
| Skill | Worked example | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio | Paint is mixed in the ratio 3 : 5. A 24-liter batch needs how many liters of each part? | 9 liters and 15 liters (24 ÷ 8 = 3, then 3 × 3 and 3 × 5) |
| Percent | What is 15% of 80? | 12 (0.15 × 80) |
| Equation | Solve x + 7 = 15 | x = 8 (subtract 7 from both sides) |
| Integers | What is −9 + 4? | −5 |
| Mean | Find the mean of 4, 7, 7, 8, 10 | 7.2 (36 ÷ 5) |
The periodic table in numbers
Students in middle school science use the periodic table to see patterns in the elements. These numbers are the ones to know before the unit starts, and the periodic table pages turn them into color, blank and quiz sheets:
| Fact | Number |
|---|---|
| Elements in the periodic table | 118 |
| Groups (columns) | 18 |
| Periods (rows) | 7 |
| Lanthanides (elements 57 to 71) | 15 |
| Actinides (elements 89 to 103) | 15 |
A five-step routine for reading worksheets in 6th grade
Sixth graders read longer and harder texts, so a routine helps them read for meaning rather than just finish. This routine works with the passages in the reading comprehension worksheets:
- Preview: read the title and the questions first, so you know what to look for.
- Read and mark: underline the main idea and circle words you do not know.
- Summarize: say the main idea in one sentence without looking back.
- Answer with evidence: for each question, find the sentence in the text that proves the answer.
- Check: compare with the answer key and note any question that needed a second reading.
How to organize a 6th grade study week
Middle school brings several teachers and several deadlines. A simple habit is to write the week’s tasks on a planner or a calendar, then place the worksheets on the days with the lightest load. Our free printable planners and calendars can help, and a short, fixed time each day makes worksheets feel routine instead of heavy.
Check work with the answer key as soon as a worksheet is finished, while the problems are still fresh. Keep a list of the problems that were wrong, and redo them two days later, because a problem solved correctly after a gap is a better sign than one solved right away.
6th grade homework: how much is enough?
A common guideline is about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night, so about an hour in 6th grade for all subjects. Worksheets should be part of that hour, not on top of it. This weekly plan shares the time across the three subjects on this page:
| Day | Focus | Suggested block |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Math: ratios and proportions | 20 min |
| Tuesday | Reading: one comprehension passage | 20 min |
| Wednesday | Math: integers or equations | 20 min |
| Thursday | Science: periodic table or review | 20 min |
| Weekly total | Short sessions, with free days for play and reading | 80 min |
