Slope worksheets help students measure how steep a line is and connect that idea to equations. These free printable slope worksheets start with finding slope from two points, move to slopes that are fractions, and continue with y = mx + b and writing equations of lines. Every PDF has an answer key, and the maker below builds fresh problems in seconds.
Quick answer: Slope is rise over run: the change in y divided by the change in x between two points, m = (y2 − y1) ÷ (x2 − x1). For (1, 2) and (3, 8), the slope is 6/2 = 3. This page has 7 free slope worksheets (PDF) with answer keys for grade 8, plus a maker. Updated October 2026.

How to find slope
- Pick two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) on the line.
- Find the rise: y2 − y1.
- Find the run: x2 − x1, in the same order.
- Divide rise by run and simplify.
Slope from two points worksheet: worked examples
Each row shows the subtraction in the same order top and bottom, then the simplified slope:
| Points | Rise ÷ run | Before simplifying | Slope |
|---|---|---|---|
| (1, 2) and (3, 8) | (8 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) | 6/2 | 3 |
| (0, 5) and (4, 1) | (1 − 5) ÷ (4 − 0) | -4/4 | -1 |
| (-2, -1) and (2, 7) | (7 − (-1)) ÷ (2 − (-2)) | 8/4 | 2 |
| (2, 3) and (6, 3) | (3 − 3) ÷ (6 − 2) | 0/4 | 0 |
| (-3, 4) and (5, -4) | (-4 − 4) ÷ (5 − (-3)) | -8/8 | -1 |
| (1, 1) and (4, 3) | (3 − 1) ÷ (4 − 1) | 2/3 | 2/3 |
Types of slope
The sign of the slope tells you which way the line leans. Students should recognize all four cases:
| Type of slope | Direction of the line | Example | Sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Positive | Rises from left to right | y = 2x + 1 | m > 0 |
| Negative | Falls from left to right | y = -3x + 4 | m < 0 |
| Zero | Horizontal line | y = 5 | m = 0 |
| Undefined | Vertical line | x = 3 | no slope |
Slope intercept form worksheet: reading y = mx + b
In y = mx + b, m is the slope and b is the y-intercept, where the line crosses the y-axis. Reading these two numbers is often enough to sketch the line:
| Equation | Slope m | y-intercept b | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| y = 3x + 2 | 3 | 2 | Up 3 for every 1 across; crosses the y-axis at (0, 2) |
| y = -x + 5 | -1 | 5 | Down 1 for every 1 across; crosses at (0, 5) |
| y = (1/2)x − 4 | 1/2 | -4 | Up 1 for every 2 across; crosses at (0, -4) |
| y = 6 | 0 | 6 | A horizontal line at height 6 |
| y = -4x | -4 | 0 | Passes through the origin |
Writing equations of lines worksheet
To write an equation from two points, find the slope first, then substitute one point into y = mx + b to find b:
| Given | Find the slope | Substitute to find b | Equation |
|---|---|---|---|
| (0, 3) and (2, 7) | (7 − 3) ÷ (2 − 0) = 2 | b = 3 from the point (0, 3) | y = 2x + 3 |
| (1, 2) and (3, 8) | (8 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = 3 | 2 = 3(1) + b, so b = -1 | y = 3x − 1 |
| (2, 5) and (4, 1) | (1 − 5) ÷ (4 − 2) = -2 | 5 = -2(2) + b, so b = 9 | y = -2x + 9 |

| Rise | The vertical change between two points | y2 − y1 |
| Run | The horizontal change between two points | x2 − x1 |
| y-intercept | The point where a line crosses the y-axis | (0, b) |

Slope practice and PDFs
This page is also searched as slope worksheet, finding slope worksheet, slope practice, y = mx + b worksheet and slope intercept form worksheet. All of them are the free PDFs above, with an answer key, for US Letter or A4, with no sign-up. The coordinate plane is a good place to plot the points.
How to use these slope worksheets
Use the slope worksheets in order. The first slope worksheets use whole-number slopes so students can focus on the rise over run idea. The later slope worksheets bring in fractions and negative slopes, and then connect slope to y = mx + b.
Sketch each pair of points on the coordinate plane when you first use the slope worksheets, so the rise and run can be seen. Print a slope worksheet for homework and use the answer key to check it. Students who need more slope worksheets can generate a new set in the maker, and slope worksheets with fresh numbers make a good retest.
Common Core standards for slope
These worksheets practice the Common Core expressions and equations standards and the functions standards for grade 8:
