Preschool Math Worksheets

Preschool math worksheets introduce the first ideas of math: counting objects, recognizing and writing numbers, comparing groups and naming shapes. These free math worksheets for preschool are made for ages 3 to 5, with big pictures and few items on each page, and every worksheet has an answer key for the grown-up. Use them alongside real objects and play, which is how young children learn math best.

Quick answer: Preschool math worksheets teach counting to 10, number recognition and writing, comparing groups (more and fewer), simple shapes and patterns. This page has free printable preschool math worksheets (counting and number tracing PDFs with answer keys), a skills guide by age, and hands-on activities. Short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes work best. Updated October 2026.

Preschool math skills in the order children learn them

Young children build math in a rough order. Every child is different, so treat this as a guide, not a checklist. The CDC lists counting and naming numbers among the milestones for ages 4 and 5 in its developmental milestones. Use the table to choose the next activity:

Skill What it looks like Try this
Rote counting Says the number words in order, 1 to 10 Count stairs, claps and steps
One-to-one counting Touches each object once while counting Count blocks, snacks and toys into a bowl
Cardinality Knows the last number said tells how many Ask “how many?” after counting
Number recognition Names the numerals 1 to 10 Number hunt on signs, clocks and books
Writing numerals Traces and then writes 0 to 10 Number tracing worksheets
Comparing Says which group has more or fewer Two plates of crackers: which has more?
Shapes Names circle, square, triangle and rectangle Shape hunt around the house
Patterns and sorting Sorts by color or size and continues an AB pattern Sort socks, build a bead pattern

Numbers 1 to 10 for preschoolers: a reference

Print this table or copy it to a poster. It shows each numeral with its word and its tally marks, which links the symbol, the word and the quantity:

Numeral Number word Tally marks Dots on a dice or ten frame
1 one | ten frame with 1 filled
2 two || ten frame with 2 filled
3 three ||| ten frame with 3 filled
4 four |||| ten frame with 4 filled
5 five |||| ten frame with 5 filled
6 six |||| | ten frame with 6 filled
7 seven |||| || ten frame with 7 filled
8 eight |||| ||| ten frame with 8 filled
9 nine |||| |||| ten frame with 9 filled
10 ten |||| |||| ten frame with 10 filled

Counting a group once and then touching each item again is a good way to check, and a ten frame (see our ten frame page) shows how many more are needed to make ten.

Shapes for preschoolers

Shape names come after counting for most children. Start with the circle, then add the square, triangle and rectangle. The table gives the facts and some everyday places to find each shape:

Shape Sides Corners Look for it in
Circle 0 0 Plates, wheels, coins, clocks
Square 4 4 Windows, crackers, tiles
Triangle 3 3 Roof tops, pizza slices, yield signs
Rectangle 4 4 Doors, books, phones

Ask your child to touch the corners and count them, which links shapes to counting. The 2D shapes worksheets page has sheets for naming shapes when your child is ready.

Comparing and position words in preschool math

Words are part of math. Children who hear and use words such as more, fewer, same, under and between find it easier to follow instructions on a worksheet. Use everyday play to practice them:

Idea Words to use Try this
More More, a lot, bigger group Put 3 crackers on one plate and 5 on the other: which has more?
Fewer Fewer, less, smaller group Which plate has fewer crackers?
Same The same, equal Make both plates have 4
Position On, under, next to, between Where is the toy bear?

Preschool math activities for home

Preschool math activities should be hands-on, short and playful. Try one a day:

  • Count the stairs as you climb them, and count them again on the way down.
  • Set the table: one plate, one cup and one spoon for each person, which is one-to-one counting.
  • Snack sorting: sort crackers by shape or fruit by color, then count each group.
  • Dice and covers: roll a die and cover that number of spots on a ten frame.
  • Shape hunt: find circles, squares and triangles in the kitchen or on a walk.
  • Bead patterns: thread red-blue-red-blue and ask what comes next.
  • Number hunt: spot the numeral 3 on doors, clocks and signs.

How to help your child with a preschool math worksheet

  1. Do it with real things first. Count blocks or snacks before you count the pictures.
  2. Read the instruction aloud. Preschoolers cannot read the page yet, so point to each part as you say it.
  3. Use a big, easy-to-hold crayon. Thick crayons and short pencils help small hands.
  4. Praise the effort, not just the right answer, and fix mistakes by counting together.
  5. Stop while it is still fun. One page is enough, and the answer key is for you, not for the child.

Math for preschoolers: how much and how often?

A common rule of thumb is two to three minutes of focus per year of age, so a four year old may work on a worksheet for eight to twelve minutes. Plan on a short worksheet two or three times a week, with play on the other days, as in this plan:

Day Focus Suggested block
Monday Count and write to 10, with real objects first 10 min
Wednesday Number tracing 0 to 5 or 0 to 10 10 min
Friday A shape hunt or a game, then one page 10 min
Weekly total Short sessions, with free days for play and reading 30 min
