The flags quiz puts 194 flags in the world into three levels, so that every player can start at the right place. Easy has 53 flags, medium has 77 and hard has 64. The easy level has the flags that people see most often, and the hard level is mostly small countries:

Guess the flag: design features to look for

To guess the flag, look at the colors, the number of stripes and the symbols before you look at anything else. These are the clues that matter most:

  • Nepal has the only national flag that is not a rectangle, and Switzerland and Vatican City have the only square ones.
  • Paraguay is the only national flag with a different design on each side.
  • Mozambique has a rifle on its flag, Cambodia a building, and the Dominican Republic a Bible.
  • Jamaica is the only flag with no red, white or blue, and Dominica has the rare color purple.
  • Indonesia and Monaco have the same red and white stripes, and Chad and Romania are almost the same, with slightly different blues.
  • Denmark has the Dannebrog, said to be the oldest national flag still in use, and the Nordic cross is on five national flags.

Flags of the world quiz: a five-day study plan

To learn the flags of the world quiz in a week, work through the levels in order. This plan uses the 53 easy, 77 medium and 64 hard flags, plus a printed test to check what you remember:

Day What to do Questions
Day 1 Play the easy level only (53 flags) until you score 100% 53
Day 2 Play the medium level (77 flags) with the timer off 77
Day 3 Play the hard level (64 flags) and say each country aloud 64
Day 4 Print the write-in sheet and name every flag from memory 14
Day 5 Play all 194 flags with the timer on and use “Practice the ones I missed” 194

Playing all 194 flags takes 39 minutes at 12 seconds each. Wikipedia’s list of national flags of sovereign states shows every flag with a short description, and the study of flags has its own name, vexillology.

World flags quiz: how to learn the flags of every continent

A world flags quiz is easier when you study one continent at a time. Start with Europe or South America, where the flags are easier, and finish with Africa, which has 54 flags and the most hard ones. Each continent has its own quiz: Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania.

Country flags quiz: which flags are shared by many countries?

The country flags quiz has many pairs of flags that look alike, such as Chad and Romania, or Indonesia and Monaco. Many of these come from a shared history, so learning the story behind a flag helps to tell the pairs apart. The hardest pairs are the ones that differ only in a coat of arms or in a shade of blue.

Flag game: how to play with a group

The flag game works well in a classroom or at a party. Show the quiz on a screen, split the group into two teams and let each team answer in turn, or print the flag grid from the write-in sheet and give every player the same page. A point goes to each correct country, and the first team to name 20 flags wins.

Make a printable version for a classroom, a quiz night or homework: choose multiple choice or write-in answers, 10 to 30 questions, and add an answer key. Download a free PDF or print straight away.
