Name Tracing for Preschool

Ready-to-print worksheets

Name sets

Name tracing for preschool is often a child’s first piece of writing. These free name tracing worksheets for preschool have extra large letters, a dark model of the name, gray rows to trace, and an empty row to write it alone. Print one of the sets of popular names, or type your own child’s name into the maker and download a sheet in seconds.

Quick answer: Preschool name tracing sheets show a child’s name in large gray letters on handwriting lines to trace. This page has 4 free name tracing PDFs with 42 popular names (10 girls names, 10 boys names, 12 short names and 10 longer names), plus a maker where you type any name, up to 24 characters, or a whole class list of up to 40 names. Updated October 2026.

Free name tracing worksheets for preschool: choose a set

If your child’s name is in one of the sets, print that page. If not, use the maker at the top of the page: type the name, pick extra large, and the sheet is ready. Names stay in your browser. The sets use some of the most common US names, so classroom teachers can often find a match for most children:

Girls: Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Evelyn, Ava, Sofia.
Boys: Liam, Noah, Oliver, Theodore, James, Henry, Mateo, Elijah, Lucas, William.

How long is a name? Name length in the sets

Shorter names are easier to trace, which is why the short names sheet is a good start for beginners. We counted the letters in the 20 popular names above:

Name length Number of names in the lists Examples
3 2 Mia, Ava
4 3 Emma, Liam, Noah
5 5 Sofia, James, Henry, Mateo
6 6 Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Evelyn
7 1 William
8 2 Isabella, Theodore
9 1 Charlotte

Most of these names have between 3 and 9 letters. A name of 9 letters, such as Charlotte, needs a smaller size to fit on the line, which is why the longer names sheet uses large rather than extra large print.

Name tracing for preschoolers by age

Children develop at different rates (see the CDC developmental milestones), so use the ages as a rough guide. This table shows what usually happens and what to print:

Age What usually happens What to print
2 to 3 Scribbles and may point to the first letter of the name The first letter, extra large
3 to 4 Traces the first letter and part of the name A short name in extra large print
4 to 5 Traces the whole name and begins to write it alone The name in large print, with an empty row
5 to 6 Writes the name from memory, usually with a capital first letter First and last name, medium print

Preschool name tracing sheets, templates and tips

This page is also searched as preschool name tracing, name tracing for preschool, name tracing for preschoolers, preschool name tracing templates and traceable name worksheets for preschool. All of these are the free PDFs and the maker above. A good tip is to teach the name with a capital first letter and lowercase letters after it, since that is how it appears in books and on name tags.

Name tracing activities for preschoolers

Name tracing is more fun when it is not only on paper. These ideas use the same name in different ways, so a child learns the letters and their order:

Activity What you need Skill
Sand name A tray of sand or salt Letter shapes without a pencil
Playdough name Playdough Finger strength and letter order
Name puzzle Name written on card, cut into letters Letter order and recognition
Name on the fridge Magnetic letters Spelling the name in order
Rainbow name Crayons in several colors Tracing the same name several times

Which size for which name?

As a rule of thumb, names with up to four letters suit extra large print, names with five to seven letters suit large print, and names with eight letters or more suit medium print, so that the whole name fits on the line. The maker adjusts the size automatically if a name is too long, and you can always choose a smaller size. For a first and last name together, medium is usually best.

Printing free name tracing worksheets for preschool

Print on US Letter or A4 at 100% scale. For a class, type all the names separated by commas, and print one page for each child. Put a finished page on the fridge or in the child’s cubby, which shows the child that their name matters. Use a sheet protector and a dry-erase marker if the child wants to trace the name again.

Name tracing and early writing

A child’s name is the first word they write for many reasons: it is meaningful, it is a short word, and they see it often. Children who can write their name tend to want to write other words too, so name tracing is a good first step to writing. After the name, move to the names of family members and friends, then to sight words.

Names from other languages and cultures

The maker works with any name that uses the letters of the English alphabet, including names from many languages, nicknames and double names. Names with accents or other alphabets are not supported in the print fonts. If a child has two names, such as a first name and a family name, type both, and choose a smaller size so they fit on a line.

Frequently asked questions

7 quick answers

Where can I download free name tracing worksheets for preschool?

Print one of the sets above, or type any name into the maker, choose US Letter or A4, and download the PDF. It is free, and no account is needed.

How do I make a name tracing worksheet for my child?

Type the name into the Name box in the maker, choose Extra large, and press Download PDF. For a class, separate names with commas to get one page per name.

Should the name be in capitals or lowercase?

Most schools teach a capital first letter followed by lowercase letters. Some preschools start with all capitals, because the strokes are simpler.

How many names can I make at once?

Up to 40 names in a single PDF, one page per name. Separate the names with commas.

What if my child has a long name?

Choose a smaller size so the name fits on the line, or trace the first name only and add the family name later.

Which font is best for name tracing?

A plain school print font such as Andika is a good default. Lexend and OpenDyslexic can be easier to read for some children.
