Letters A to Z

Full set

Alphabet order

Letter practice worksheets give young learners everything they need to know one letter at a time. Each free printable pack for a letter has four pages: trace the letter, find it among other letters, follow it through a maze, and color it with starting sound words. There are 26 packs, plus a full alphabet tracing set, a missing letters page and an uppercase and lowercase matching page, with an answer key where needed.

Quick answer: Letter practice worksheets help children recognize, say and write each letter of the alphabet. A letter pack usually includes tracing, finding the letter, a letter maze and coloring. This page has 29 free letter practice worksheets (PDF) with answer keys and a maker. Updated October 2026.

What is in a letter practice pack?

  1. Trace the letter: big uppercase and lowercase letters to trace, with guide lines.
  2. Find the letter: a grid of letters where the child circles the target letter, which builds recognition.
  3. Letter maze: a path that follows the target letter, which trains the eyes to find it quickly.
  4. Color the letter: a big bubble letter and words that start with the letter to trace.

Alphabet writing practice: how to form each letter

Correct letter formation saves effort later. Teach children to start at the top and use the same strokes each time. This table gives a simple description for every uppercase letter, to say aloud while the child traces:

Letter How to make it
A Slide down left, slide down right, then add a bar across.
B Line down, then two bumps to the right.
C Start at the top right, curve left and around.
D Line down, then a big curve to the right.
E Line down, then three lines across: top, middle, bottom.
F Line down, then two lines across: top and middle.
G Curve like a C, then a short line in and across.
H Two lines down, then a bar across the middle.
I Line down, with a short line across at the top and bottom.
J Line down, then curve left at the bottom.
K Line down, then two slanting lines that meet it.
L Line down, then a line across the bottom.
M Line down, slant to the middle, slant up, line down.
N Line down, slant down, line up.
O Start at the top and curve all the way around.
P Line down, then a bump at the top.
Q Make an O, then a short tail line.
R Line down, a bump at the top, then a kick leg.
S Curve at the top, then curve back at the bottom, like a snake.
T A line across the top, then a line down the middle.
U Line down, curve at the bottom, line up.
V Slant down, then slant up.
W Slant down, up, down, up.
X Two slanting lines that cross.
Y Two short slants that meet, then a line down.
Z Line across, slant down to the left, line across.

Letter groups that make writing easier

Teaching letters in groups that share strokes is faster than going in A to Z order. The groups below are used in many handwriting programs:

Group Letters Shared stroke
Line letters I, L, T, H, E, F Mostly straight lines
Curve letters C, O, Q, G, S Start with a curve
Line and curve D, P, B, R, J, U A line and a bump or curve
Slant letters A, V, W, X, Y, Z, K, M, N Slanting lines

Letter recognition worksheets: seeing the difference

Children need to notice small differences, such as b and d or p and q. The find-the-letter pages in each pack mix the target letter with letters that look similar, which makes children look closely. Practice similar pairs side by side, and use the missing letters and matching sheets to check the order of the alphabet and the link between uppercase and lowercase.

Kindergarten RF.K.3a Know the sounds of the letters

Gripping too tightly White knuckles, pain Use a short pencil or crayon and a relaxed tripod grip
Writing every letter the same size Tall and short letters equal Use lined paper with a midline
Practicing too long Messy writing after 20 minutes Do five minutes of good letters rather than 20 of tired ones

How to use these letter practice worksheets

Work through the letter practice worksheets one letter a week, or two a week if your child is moving quickly. Start with the tracing page while saying the formation words, then do the find-the-letter and maze pages, and finish with the coloring page and the starting sound words. The maker above prints any set of letters, which is useful for a child’s name or for the letters taught first.

Keep each session to five to ten minutes. Review earlier letters with the missing letters and matching sheets every few weeks. Because the packs include an answer key for the finding and maze pages, you can check the letter practice worksheets together in a minute.

A weekly plan for letter practice

Day Focus Suggested block
Monday Trace the new letter 10 min
Tuesday Find the letter and the maze 10 min
Wednesday Color the letter and trace the words 10 min
