What fourth graders learn
Fourth grade stretches every skill to bigger numbers and deeper reading. The targets below follow the Common Core grade 4 math standards; pick free 4th grade worksheets for whichever row your child is working on now.
| Topic | By the end of the year | Try these |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplication | Multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number, and two two-digit numbers | Multiplication, 12 times table game |
| Division | Divide numbers up to four digits by a one-digit divisor, with remainders | Long division, long division calculator |
| Fractions | Find equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and add or subtract fractions with the same denominator | Fraction strips, comparing fractions game |
| Decimals | Write tenths and hundredths as decimals, such as 3/10 = 0.3 and 45/100 = 0.45 | Decimals, place value chart |
| Measurement and angles | Convert units within one system and measure angles in degrees | Measurement, geometry |
| Reading | Explain a theme, make inferences and compare how two texts treat the same topic | 3rd and 4th grade passages |
| Writing | Write an opinion piece with reasons, and a report with facts from more than one source | Story and writing paper |
Multiplying big numbers with the area model
Before the standard method, many schools teach the area model, because it shows why multiplication works. To find 23 × 14, split each number into tens and ones and draw a box:
- 20 × 10 = 200
- 20 × 4 = 80
- 3 × 10 = 30
- 3 × 4 = 12
Add the four parts: 200 + 80 + 30 + 12 = 322. Once the area model feels natural, the standard written method is just a shorter way of recording the same four products. The multiplication pages in these grade 4 worksheets start with two-digit by one-digit problems and build up from there.
Long division, one step at a time
Long division has four repeating steps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Many children remember them with the phrase “Does McDonald’s Sell Burgers?”. Here is 732 ÷ 4:
- Divide 7 by 4. It goes in 1 time; write 1 above the 7.
- Multiply and subtract. 1 × 4 = 4, and 7 − 4 = 3.
- Bring down the 3. That makes 33. How many 4s fit into 33? Eight of them make 32, so write 8 and carry the 1 left over.
- Bring down the 2. Divide 12 by 4 to get 3, with nothing left over.
- Check. The answer is 183, and 183 × 4 = 732.
Start with the long division worksheets that have no remainders, then add remainders once the steps are automatic.
Reading between the lines
Fourth grade reading asks children to work out what the author does not say directly. After a chapter, ask what a character is feeling and which words gave it away, or what lesson the story is trying to teach. The character traits organizer and the reading passages in the fourth grade worksheets above turn those conversations into short written answers.
Ready for 5th grade?
If most of these are secure, look at the 5th grade worksheets; for gaps, the 3rd grade worksheets are the place to revise.
- Multiplies 46 × 27 with the area model or the written method.
- Finds 856 ÷ 7 and writes the remainder correctly.
- Knows that 2/3 = 4/6 and that 0.7 is the same as 7/10.
- Writes an opinion paragraph with at least two reasons.
Helping a fourth grader at home
- Keep the tables sharp. Big multiplication and long division fall apart if basic facts are slow, so keep a quick daily facts round.
- Estimate first. Before any long calculation, ask for a rough answer so silly mistakes stand out.
- Use money for decimals. Dollars and cents, or rupees and paise, make tenths and hundredths real.
- Talk about books. Ask “Why do you think she did that?” rather than “What happened?”.
- Write for a reason. A letter to a grandparent or a review of a favorite game is real writing practice.

Frequently asked questions
10 quick answers
What should 4th graders practice?
The focus is multiplying and dividing larger numbers, equivalent fractions and simple decimals, plus finding the theme of a story and backing up answers with evidence.
How do I help with long division?
Follow the four-step cycle shown above, and begin with problems that divide evenly before adding remainders.
Are these worksheets for grade 4 or Class 4?
Both. Fourth grade, grade 4 and Class 4 name the same school year, when most children are nine or ten. These worksheets for grade 4 follow the US sequence, which lines up well with Class 4 math and English in Pakistan and India; in England it is Year 5.
