Europe flag quiz: design features to look for
Every question in an Europe flag quiz comes down to a few design clues: the colors, the number of stripes and the symbols. These are the clues that matter most in Europe:
- Switzerland and Vatican City have the only square national flags in the world.
- The Nordic cross is an off-center cross, and it is on the flags of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. The flag of Denmark is said to be the oldest national flag still in use.
- Romania, Andorra and Moldova all have blue, yellow and red stripes, and Moldova and Andorra add a coat of arms.
- Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia have white, blue and red stripes. Slovakia and Slovenia have a coat of arms on the left.
- The United Kingdom’s Union Jack joins the crosses of St George, St Andrew and St Patrick, and Malta’s flag carries the George Cross in the corner.
- Luxembourg and the Netherlands have red, white and blue stripes, and the blue of Luxembourg is lighter.
- Cyprus shows the shape of the island on its flag, with two olive branches below.
