Halloween I Spy: 9 Free Printable Find and Count Pages

Halloween I spy printable: a child in a witch hat circling hidden pumpkins and ghosts on a find and count worksheet

Print these Halloween I spy pages for a class party, a trick-or-treat waiting game or a quiet October afternoon. Each one is a crowded picture of friendly Halloween artwork with a checklist underneath: find each item, circle it and write how many there are. There are three themed packs, and every PDF has an easy, a medium and a hard page plus an answer key. Each Halloween I spy page asks children to find and count spooky pictures.

Halloween I spy: Easy haunted night I spy page with ghosts, bats, spiders and pumpkins to find and count
An easy page from the haunted night pack: find the four spooky items in the checklist, circle each one and write how many you counted.

Quick answer: open a pack below, print the Halloween I spy PDF and hand out pencils. Page 1 is easy, page 2 is medium, page 3 is hard, and the last three pages show every answer circled. For a party, print one pack per table and let teams race to finish first.

Halloween I spy printables (PDF)

Each pack is a six-page PDF: three puzzles followed by three answer pages. Click a picture to open the PDF; the preview shows the medium page.

Which level should you print?

The three levels change the size of the pictures, how crowded the page is and how many things there are to find. The numbers below come from the pages in these packs.

Level Pictures on the page Things to find How many of each Good for
Easy about 44 4 kinds 2 to 5 Ages 4 to 5, first counting
Medium about 78 6 kinds 3 to 7 Ages 6 to 8
Hard about 118 6 kinds 5 to 8 Ages 8 and up, families, party games

How to use a Halloween I spy worksheet at a party or in class

  1. Choose a pack. Haunted night is the spookiest, Halloween treats is the sweetest and costume party has the most people to find.
  2. Print one set per team. Two or three children share a page and a pencil, which keeps the table calm.
  3. Read the checklist aloud. Say each name together, for example “bats” or “lollipops”, before anyone starts to look.
  4. Circle, count and write. Teams circle every match and put the total in the box.
  5. Check with the answer page. Each answer page circles every target and prints the total, so teams can mark their own work and cheer for a perfect score.

Classroom and party ideas

Moment Pack to print Why it works
Arrival activity Haunted night, easy Children can start alone while others arrive.
Party table game Halloween treats, medium A treat theme keeps the table focused and happy.
Early finishers Costume party, hard The smaller pictures give faster readers a longer challenge.
Waiting in line Any easy page on a clipboard A single page and a pencil is all a child needs.

Slide a page into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker if you want to reuse it, or print a fresh copy for every guest to take home. Teachers can also keep a set of Halloween I spy printables in the sub folder for a quiet, ready-made activity.

Learning ideas built on the pages

The counting totals turn a simple puzzle into a short lesson. Try one of these after children finish a page:

  • Make a bar graph. Draw one bar for each item on the checklist and color in as many squares as the child counted, then ask which item was the most common.
  • Sort and compare. Circle the sweet items in one color and the spooky items in another, then write which group is bigger.
  • Write a sentence. Each child picks one item and writes a sentence such as “I found five bats”, which practices number words and spelling.
  • Add the totals. Add two of the counts together, or find the total of all six items on a medium page, for early addition practice.
  • Compare packs. Do the haunted night, treats and costume packs use the same total number of pictures at each level? The table above shows how many there are.

These steps work for a whole class, a small group at a math center or a single child at the kitchen table.

Spooky, but friendly

Every picture is a cartoon, and not one of them is gory. The haunted night pack does include ghosts, bats, spiders and skulls, so if a child is sensitive to those, choose the treats or costume party pack instead. You can also swap in the everyday I spy packs for a spook-free page.

Use the Halloween I spy pages at a class party as a quiet table activity between games.

How these pages are made

Each page is generated by a program: it chooses the targets for the checklist, fixes how many of each there will be, then scatters those pictures among many others so that nothing overlaps. The answer page is drawn from the same data, so the circles and totals always match the puzzle.

The pictures are Noto Emoji artwork from Google, used under the Apache License 2.0; the project is on GitHub. A credit line is printed at the bottom of every page.
