Countdown to any date in four steps
- Choose the event: pick a theme, or “Anything else” and type your own title such as “Countdown to Grandma’s visit”. Your title stays on your device and is never added to the link.
- Set the date: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day and New Year fill in their own dates; for birthdays, school, trips and custom events, enter the day.
- Pick the length: 10, 14, 20, 24, 25, 30, 50 or 100 days. For a longer wait, the countdown shows the last 100 days.
- Choose a style and print: a color-in grid of squares, circles or theme shapes, or a paper chain to cut out, in color or as outlines to color in.
Themes and their dates
| Theme | Date | Shapes |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas | December 25 | Trees |

| Valentine’s Day | February 14 | Hearts |
| Birthday | Your date | Balloons |

| First day of school | Your date | School buses |
| Winter break | Your date | Snowflakes |
| Vacation, trip or anything else | Your date | Stars |
For the two most popular countdowns there are dedicated pages: the Christmas countdown calendar and the birthday countdown printable.
Days until countdown: how long should it be?
The right length depends on who is waiting. A days until countdown that is too long can feel endless for a small child, while a short one can be over before the excitement builds.
- Ages 3 to 5: 10 to 14 days. Big spaces and theme shapes are easiest to color.
- Ages 5 to 8: 20 to 30 days, with the date shown in each space for reading practice.
- Older children and adults: 50 or 100 days for big events such as a wedding, a move, a new baby or the end of the school year.
Paper chain countdown
A paper chain countdown is a classic craft. Choose “Paper chain” in the maker and each day prints as a numbered strip. Cut the strips out, loop the first one and tape or glue it closed, then thread the next strip through and keep going, with the biggest number at the end. Hang the chain somewhere everyone can see it and tear off one loop each morning; when the last loop is gone, the big day has arrived. Printing on colored or slightly thicker paper makes the chain sturdier and brighter.
Printable countdown chart for the classroom
Teachers use a printable countdown chart to count down to the 100th day of school, a field trip, a school show, state tests or summer vacation. Print a large 100-day chart for the wall and let the class helper color one space each morning. Counting down builds number sense: children count backwards, spot patterns in tens, and work out how many days are left by subtraction. Pair it with a hundreds chart to count the days of school forwards at the same time, and with the daily calendar time worksheet for morning meetings.
More countdown ideas
- Family events: a new baby, a wedding, a family reunion or a grandparent’s visit.
- Big changes: moving house, starting a new school or a parent coming home from a long trip.
- Health and goals: the last days of a cast or brace, a race day, or the end of a 30-day challenge.
- Holidays: Easter, Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah, Lunar New Year or the Fourth of July.
The idea of counting down to a key moment became famous with rocket launches, as Wikipedia’s countdown article explains, and children love the same build-up of excitement.
Make the countdown extra special
- Mini rewards: mark every fifth or tenth space with a star for a small treat, a sticker or an outing.
- Daily jobs: for a trip, write one packing or planning job in pencil next to some spaces.
- Two colors: color weekdays and weekends differently, so children see how many school days are left.
- Photo finish: take a photo of the finished chart on the big day and keep it as a memory.
- Share it: print a second copy for grandparents, so they can count down too.
Why countdowns help children
Young children find it hard to picture “two weeks away”. A countdown turns time into something they can see and touch: the spaces left to color are the days left to wait. It also practices counting backwards and reading dates, and cuts down on “how many more sleeps?” questions.
