What is my elf name? The North Pole name chart
Your elf name has two parts. Your birth month gives your elf first name, and the first letter of your first name gives your elf last name. Each month has two words, so brothers and sisters born in the same month do not always match. The generator picks one of the two from your name; with the printed chart, you choose.

How to choose a name for your Elf on the Shelf
The Elf on the Shelf began as a 2005 picture book by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell, and in the story the family names their scout elf. A good name makes the first morning easier, so it is worth a minute of thought.
- Keep it short. One or two syllables, like Pip or Tinsel, are easy for young children to say and remember.
- Match a personality. A cheeky elf might be Pepper or Sprinkles; a calm one might be Juniper or Clover.
- Let the children vote. Read three names from the list and let them pick, or press the Christmas elf names tab together.
- Write it in the welcome letter. The Elf on the Shelf arrival letter has a line for the elf’s name.
- Plan the first few mornings. The easy Elf on the Shelf ideas guide has quick setups for busy evenings.
Famous Christmas elves
Santa’s helpers did not have names in the early stories. These are some of the best-known named elves, and Santa himself was the first “elf” in the most famous Christmas poem.
| Elf | Where from | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Santa Claus, “a right jolly old elf” | A Visit from St. Nicholas (“’Twas the Night Before Christmas”) | 1823 |
| Hermey, the elf who wants to be a dentist | Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Rankin/Bass TV special | 1964 |
| Bernard, the head elf | The Santa Clause film | 1994 |
| Buddy, a human raised by elves | Elf film | 2003 |
| The scout elf | The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition book | 2005 |
Where Christmas elves come from
The word elf comes from the álfar of Norse mythology, centuries older than any Christmas story. In Scandinavia, the gift-bringer grew out of a small farm guardian: by 1891 Saint Nicholas had merged with the Swedish tomte, and the illustrator Jenny Nyström helped make the figure known as Jultomten.
In English, Clement Clarke Moore’s poem of 1823, as it is usually credited, calls Santa “a right jolly old elf”. The idea of many elves making toys in a workshop was popularized by the cover of the 1873 Christmas issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, which showed Santa surrounded by toys and elves. Today the elves are usually described as Santa’s helpers at the North Pole, who make the toys and look after the reindeer.
How the elf name generator makes each name
There is no official list, so every result comes from the word lists on this page. Knowing the rules lets you check a name or make one by hand.
- North Pole name: fixed for each name and month. The same spelling and month always give the same first name, last name and job, so you can share it and get the same answer tomorrow.
- Christmas elf names: a cheerful start (Snowy, Jolly, Cookie and 21 more) joined to a small ending (bell, toes, sprout and 17 more), sometimes with a last name from the chart.
- Fantasy elf names: built from soft syllables, then checked. Names with three vowels or three consonants in a row are skipped, and so are well-known names from J. R. R. Tolkien’s books, such as Legolas, Elrond and Galadriel, so your character feels like your own.
Tolkien built whole Elvish languages, Quenya and Sindarin, for his elves. The fantasy names here only borrow that flowing sound; they are not words in either language.
Elf name games for a class or party
- Badge station: put the chart on a table with the name tags and pens. Guests find their elf name on the chart, or with the generator on a phone, and wear it all party.
- Guess the elf: everyone writes their elf name on a slip. Read them out and guess who each one belongs to.
- Workshop roll call: a teacher calls children by their workshop names instead of their real ones for one morning in December.
- Elf job interview: each child reads the workshop job from the generator and explains in one sentence why they are perfect for it.

Frequently asked questions
8 quick answers
How do I find my elf name?
Use your birth month for your elf first name and the first letter of your first name for your elf last name. Type both into the North Pole name tab and the generator gives you the full name and a workshop job.
Why does the generator give me the same elf name every time?
The North Pole name is worked out from your name and birth month, not picked at random, so the same details always give the same result. Use the other two tabs for fresh ideas each time.
Is this elf name tool free and private?
Yes. It is free, there is nothing to sign up for, and the names are made in your browser. What you type is not sent anywhere or saved.
What is a good name for an Elf on the Shelf?
Short, friendly names work best for young children, such as Pip, Tinsel, Sprinkles, Juniper or Biscuit. The Christmas tab gives ten more each time you press it.
What are some fantasy elf names?
Sylora Moonwhisper, Faenyriel Silverleaf, Valathas Starbrook and Maeriwyn Dawnsong are examples. The fantasy tab mixes soft syllables with nature family names.
Can I use these names for a story or a game character?
Yes. The names are made up from simple word parts, and well-known names from famous books are filtered out. For a published book or game, search the name first to make sure nobody else is using it.
What is the name of Santa’s head elf?
There is no single answer, because each story invents its own. In the film The Santa Clause (1994), for example, the head elf is called Bernard.
How many Elf on the Shelf names are on the printable list?
The printable list includes 30 Elf on the Shelf names, all one or two syllables so a three-year-old can say them, such as Pip, Jingle, Tinsel, Sprinkles, Cocoa and Juniper. It also has Christmas and fantasy names.
