Jump to a grade: Preschool Worksheets Kindergarten 1st Grade 2nd Grade 3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade 6th Grade
Quick answer: preschool worksheets are short, playful pages for children aged about three to five, before kindergarten. The same years are called playgroup and nursery in Pakistan and India (then LKG), nursery or pre-school in the UK, and pre-K in the US, so these double as nursery worksheets and playgroup worksheets. They build pencil control, colors and shapes, letter recognition and counting to 10. This page has free printable preschool worksheets for ages 2 to 5: pre-writing lines, letter of the week, name tracing, counting to 10 and puzzles. Updated October 2026.
Math: counting, number tracing and shapes are on the preschool math worksheets page.

Preschool skills by age
Every child develops at their own pace, so treat these as rough guides rather than targets. The CDC developmental milestones are a helpful reference if you want to know what is typical at each age. Use the table to find worksheets for 3 year olds, worksheets for 4 year olds and pages for children about to turn five.
| Age and class | Many children enjoy… | Good pages to try |
|---|---|---|
| About 2 to 3 (toddlers, playgroup) | Scribbling, big crayon strokes, matching colors and pictures, saying numbers out loud | Simple coloring, big tracing lines |
| About 3 to 4 (nursery) | Tracing straight and curved lines, spotting the letters in their name, counting up to 5 objects, sorting by color or size | Letter of the week, five frames |
| About 4 to 5 (pre-K, LKG) | Tracing letters and numbers, writing their own name, counting objects to 10, naming shapes, hearing rhymes | Name tracing, number tracing, rhyming |
Pre-writing strokes, in the order children learn them
Before letters, children learn a set of basic strokes, and they tend to master them in roughly this order. The tracing lines pages follow the same sequence, so start at the top and move on only when a stroke feels easy.
- Vertical lines. Top to bottom, like rain falling.
- Horizontal lines. Left to right, like a road.
- Circles. Round and closed, the start of a, d, g and o.
- Crosses. One line down and one across, as in t and +.
- Diagonals and squares. Slanting lines lead to x, k and v, and squares to many capital letters.
Most children only manage diagonal lines and triangles closer to five, which is why the letter tracing pages are kept for the end of the preschool years.
Play first, then one page
At this age a worksheet works best as the last step of something hands-on. Count real snacks before the five frames page, sort socks by color before the sorting page, or find things that rhyme with cat around the house before the rhyming page. Five minutes of play and two minutes of preschool worksheets teach more than twenty minutes of paper alone, and they keep the experience happy.
Ready for kindergarten, KG or Prep?
When most of these are true, the kindergarten worksheets are the next step:
- Holds a crayon or pencil with the fingers rather than a fist.
- Traces a straight line and a circle without going far off the path.
- Recognises the letters in their own name.
- Counts five objects and says how many there are.
- Sits with an adult for a five-minute activity.
Helping a preschooler at home
- Use big tools. Chunky crayons, thick pencils and large paper are easier for small hands.
- Sit beside them. Trace a line yourself first, then let them copy your movement.
- Talk while they work. Name the colors, count the dots and say the letter sounds together.
- Print it bigger. Every page can be printed on A4 or Letter, so choose the larger size for little hands.
- Stop early. End on a smile, even if the page is only half finished.
