What is Ram Navami?
Read this short explanation aloud before the quiz.
Ram Navami is the festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ram, the prince of Ayodhya and hero of the Ramayana. Hindus believe Ram is the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festival falls on Navami, the ninth day of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Chaitra, which comes in March or April.
According to Valmiki’s Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya had no children for many years. After a great fire ceremony, his three queens were blessed with sons, and Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Ram. Ram is believed to have been born at midday, so the main prayers on Ram Navami are held around noon.
Ram Navami is also the ninth and last day of Chaitra Navratri, the spring Navratri. Many families fast during the nine days and end the fast after the Ram Navami prayers.

Ayodhya and the Surya Tilak
At the Ram temple in Ayodhya, a system of mirrors, lenses and brass pipes, designed by scientists at CSIR-CBRI Roorkee, sends a beam of noon sunlight onto the forehead of the Ram Lalla idol. It was first seen on Ram Navami in 2024 and lasts a few minutes. It is a good link between the festival and science lessons on light and reflection.
Bhadrachalam Sita Rama Kalyanam
In Bhadrachalam, Ram Navami is celebrated as the wedding day of Ram and Sita. The Kalyanam is performed in the late morning, and talambralu are showered on the deities at noon. By tradition, the state government sends silk clothes and pearls for the ceremony, and devotees take home talambralu as a blessing.
