Diwali 2027: the festival of lights

Diwali 2027 is on Friday, October 29, on the new moon night (Amavasya) of the month of Kartika. Homes are cleaned and decorated with rangoli and rows of clay lamps called diyas, families perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening, and the night ends with sweets and fireworks. Diwali is the center of a five-day festival:

  • Dhanteras: usually two days before Diwali, a day for buying gold, silver or new utensils.
  • Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali): the day before Diwali.
  • Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: Friday, October 29.
  • Govardhan Puja: Saturday, October 30, honoring Lord Krishna.
  • Bhai Duj: Sunday, October 31, celebrating brothers and sisters.

Diwali is also celebrated by Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists, and it is a public holiday in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago and other countries.

Holi 2027: the festival of colors

Holi 2027 is on Monday, March 22, the day after the full moon bonfire of Holika Dahan on the evening of Sunday, March 21. It celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil, from the story of Prahlad and Holika. People throw colored powder and water, share sweets such as gujiya, and visit friends and family. Choose natural, skin-safe colors and protect eyes, especially for children.

The nine nights of Navratri end the day before Dussehra, which falls on Saturday, October 9 in 2027. Navratri honors the goddess Durga in her nine forms, with fasting, garba and dandiya dances in Gujarat and Durga Puja in Bengal. Dussehra marks Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, and in many towns giant effigies of Ravana are burned. Karwa Chauth follows on Monday, October 18, then the five days of Diwali and Chhath Puja on Thursday, November 4.

How the Hindu calendar 2027 works

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunisolar calendar. Months follow the moon, and an extra month is added every few years to keep the festivals in their seasons, so Diwali always falls in October or November and Holi in March. A few festivals, such as Makar Sankranti and Vaisakhi, follow the sun and stay close to the same date every year. Different regions use different calendar systems and start the month at the new moon or the full moon, which is why some festivals are kept on different days in different states. Wikipedia’s Hindu calendar article explains the tithis, months and eras in detail.

The calendar maker below opens with the Hindu festivals for 2027 already marked. Switch between a year at a glance, one page per month or a single month; add India’s public holidays or another country’s holidays on top, turn on moon phases to see the new and full moons, and download a free PDF for US Letter, A4 or A5.
