Who is Hanuman? The story in brief

Read this aloud before the quiz. Hanuman is one of the most loved figures in the Ramayana and is worshipped across India as a symbol of strength, courage and devotion.

According to tradition, Hanuman was born to Anjana and Kesari, a vanara chief, and is called the son of Vayu, the wind god. As a baby, he saw the rising Sun and leapt into the sky to eat it, thinking it was a ripe fruit. Indra struck him with his thunderbolt and hurt his jaw. The Sanskrit word hanu means jaw, and this is the best-known story of how he got his name. The gods then gave him many blessings and great powers.

Hanuman became the minister of the vanara king Sugriva. When Ram came searching for Sita, Hanuman was the first to meet him, and he served Ram for the rest of his life. In the Sundara Kanda, the fifth book of Valmiki’s Ramayana, he leaps across the ocean to Lanka, finds Sita, and brings back the news that she is safe. Hanuman is believed to be a chiranjivi, one who lives on through the ages, which is why many people believe he is present wherever the Ramayana is told.
