What is on each of the Dussehra coloring pages

Every Dussehra colouring page shows one big picture with wide spaces to fill. Here is what you get and who each page suits best.

Page Picture Good for age Colour idea or fun fact
1 Ravan effigy with ten heads and fireworks 5 to 9 Ravan is shown with ten heads. In the story, they stand for his great learning and also his pride.
2 Young Lord Ram with bow and arrow 4 to 7 Ram is often painted with blue or blue-green skin and yellow clothes. His bow is famous in the Ramayana.
3 Hanuman flying with the mountain 5 to 8 Hanuman carried a whole mountain to bring a healing herb, called sanjeevani, for Ram’s brother Lakshman.
4 Dussehra fair with Ravan effigy, Ramlila stage and balloons 6 to 9 Ramlila is a stage play of the Ramayana, often acted over the nine nights before Dussehra.
5 Bow and arrow in a mandala border with marigolds 6 to 9 Use marigold orange and yellow for the flowers, and repeat colours around the circle.

Younger kids can begin with the Ram coloring page, which has the biggest shapes. Older children who like detail will enjoy the fair scene and the mandala. For a Ravan drawing for kids, children can trace the effigy on page 1 and then draw their own Dussehra drawing of the fair.

Coloring tips for kids

  • Crayons or markers? Crayons are best for little hands and large areas like the sky. Markers give bold colour but can bleed, so put a spare sheet under the page. Coloured pencils are good for the small mandala petals.
  • Traditional colours. Marigold garlands are orange and yellow. Ram is usually blue with yellow or saffron clothes. Hanuman is often shown in orange or red. Ravan effigies at fairs are very bright, with red, yellow, green and gold.
  • Fireworks. Color the sky dark blue or black first, then add bright bursts of yellow, pink and white. White crayon on dark paper areas looks great.
  • Add some sparkle. A little glitter glue on the crowns, the fireworks or the arrow tip makes the page shine. Let it dry flat.
  • Mandala trick. Choose three or four colours and use them in the same order all the way around. The pattern will look neat and even.

Turn the colouring into a festival activity

  • Classroom display. Put the five pages in story order on a wall: Ram, Hanuman, Ravan, then the fair and the mandala. Children can retell the story by pointing to each picture.
  • Greeting card. Cut out the colored bow and arrow mandala, glue it on folded card and write “Happy Dussehra” inside.
  • Story writing. Ask kids to write a few lines about what Hanuman sees as he flies. Use our story paper or a storyboard template to draw the story in boxes.
  • Write 10 lines. After coloring, children can write simple sentences about the festival with help from 10 lines on Dussehra.
  • Quiz time. End with a few questions from our Dussehra quiz for kids or the Ramayana quiz for kids.
  • Hanuman facts. Pair page 3 with our Hanuman quiz for children who want to learn more.

A note for teachers and parents

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, comes on the tenth day after the nine nights of Navratri. Many people celebrate it as the day Lord Ram defeated Ravan. In parts of India, such as Bengal, the same day marks the end of Durga Puja and Goddess Durga’s win over the demon Mahishasura. The main idea shared by all is that good wins over evil. At public events, large effigies of Ravan are burned in open grounds, and families watch from a safe distance behind barriers. You can explain this simply to children as a way of showing that bad habits like pride and anger should be left behind. These pages contain no prayer text, so they suit mixed classrooms.
