Chinese New Year 2027: the Year of the Goat

Chinese New Year 2027 starts on Saturday, February 6 and runs until the Lantern Festival on February 20. The Goat is the eighth of the 12 zodiac animals, and 2027 is a Fire Goat year. People born in Goat years are traditionally described as gentle, creative and kind. The previous Goat years were 2015 and 2003, and the next is 2039.

Preparations start before the holiday. In 2027, Laba Festival, when families cook a sweet porridge of grains, nuts and dried fruit, falls on January 15, and Little New Year, when the house is swept clean to make room for good luck, falls on January 30. New Year’s Eve, Friday, February 5, is the night of the family reunion dinner, with dumplings in the north and rice cakes in the south.

Lunar New Year 2027 traditions

  • Red envelopes: money in red envelopes, called hongbao, for children and unmarried relatives.
  • Spring couplets: red paper verses pasted on either side of the front door.
  • Fireworks and lion dances: to scare off bad luck and welcome the new year.
  • Visits: the first days are for visiting parents, in-laws and older relatives.
  • Lucky foods: fish for surplus, dumplings shaped like old silver ingots, and noodles for long life.

Lunar New Year 2027 is also celebrated across East and Southeast Asia, including as Tết in Vietnam and Seollal in Korea, which is why many people prefer the name Lunar New Year. In mainland China, the official Spring Festival holiday usually lasts around eight days.

Mid-Autumn Festival 2027

The Mid-Autumn Festival 2027 falls on Wednesday, September 15, the night of the full harvest moon. Families gather outside to admire the moon, share round mooncakes filled with lotus seed paste, red bean or salted egg yolk, and children carry lanterns. The festival is linked to the legend of Chang’e, who flew to the moon after drinking an elixir of immortality. Turn on moon phases in the calendar maker to see the full moon printed on the date.

The other Chinese festivals 2027

  • Lantern Festival (February 20): the first full moon of the year, with lantern riddles and sweet rice balls called tangyuan.
  • Qingming Festival (April 5): families sweep the graves of their ancestors and leave flowers and food.
  • Dragon Boat Festival (June 9): dragon boat races and zongzi, sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, in memory of the poet Qu Yuan.
  • Qixi Festival (August 8): the story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, now often called Chinese Valentine’s Day.
  • Ghost Festival (August 16): offerings to ancestors and wandering spirits in the seventh lunar month.
  • Double Ninth Festival (October 8): a day for climbing hills, drinking chrysanthemum tea and honoring older people.
  • Winter Solstice (December 22): families eat dumplings or tangyuan on the longest night of the year.

How the Chinese calendar works

The traditional calendar is lunisolar: each month starts at a new moon, and a leap month is added about every three years to keep the months in step with the seasons. That is why Chinese New Year always falls between January 21 and February 20. Wikipedia’s Chinese calendar article explains leap months and the 24 solar terms in detail.
