Bank holidays Ireland 2027: when a holiday falls on a weekend
In 2027 Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and St Stephen’s Day on a Sunday. Unlike the UK, Ireland does not automatically move public holidays to the next weekday. Instead, employees are entitled to one of the following for each public holiday, as chosen by their employer:
- a paid day off on the day itself,
- a paid day off within a month of the day,
- an extra day of annual leave, or
- an extra day’s pay.
Many employers give the following Monday and Tuesday off in late December, but check your contract or ask your employer. Part-time workers qualify once they have worked at least 40 hours in the five weeks before the holiday. 2027 bank holidays Ireland: long weekends and leave
Seven of the ten Irish public holidays 2027 fall on a Monday or Friday, so there are plenty of long weekends:
- New Year: Friday, January 1 to Sunday, January 3.
- St Brigid’s Day: Saturday, January 30 to Monday, February 1.
- Easter: Saturday, March 27 to Easter Monday, March 29. Good Friday is not a public holiday in Ireland, although schools and many businesses close.
- May, June, August and October: each has a bank holiday Monday: May 3, June 7, August 2 and October 25.
St Patrick’s Day is a Wednesday in 2027, so taking two days off either side gives a five-day break. Over Christmas, using three or four days of annual leave between December 27 and 31 turns the holidays into a break of more than a week.

St Patrick’s Day on March 17 is Ireland’s national day, celebrated with parades in every town and in cities around the world. St Brigid’s Day became a public holiday in 2023, the first new Irish public holiday in decades. It honors Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland’s patron saints, and the start of spring in the old Irish calendar (Imbolc). It falls on the first Monday in February, or on February 1 itself when that date is a Friday. Children often make a St Brigid’s cross from rushes at school.
