Easter 2027 and Holy Week

Easter 2027 is on Sunday, March 28, one of the earlier dates possible. Western churches celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, so it can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25. Holy Week 2027 runs like this:

  • Palm Sunday, March 21: remembers Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, with palm crosses and processions.
  • Maundy Thursday, March 25: remembers the Last Supper; many churches hold a foot-washing service.
  • Good Friday, March 26: remembers the crucifixion, a day of quiet services and fasting.
  • Holy Saturday, March 27: a day of waiting, ending with the Easter Vigil after dark.
  • Easter Sunday, March 28: celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, the most important day of the Christian year.

Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to work out Easter, so Orthodox Easter 2027 is on May 2, five weeks later. Wikipedia’s computus article explains how the date is calculated.

Ash Wednesday 2027 and Lent 2027

Ash Wednesday 2027 is on February 10. Many Christians receive a cross of ashes on the forehead as a sign of repentance. Lent 2027 runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, March 27: 46 days in all, or 40 days if you do not count the Sundays, matching the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. The day before, Shrove Tuesday, February 9, is known as Pancake Day in the UK and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, a last feast before the fast. Orthodox Great Lent 2027 begins later, on Clean Monday, March 15.

Lent is traditionally a time of prayer, fasting and giving to others. Popular Lent ideas for families include a 40-day reading plan, a jar for coins given to charity, or giving up a treat. Print a countdown calendar to tick off each day until Easter.

The church year after Easter

  • Ascension Day, May 6: 40 days after Easter, when Jesus ascended to heaven.
  • Pentecost, May 16: 50 days after Easter, the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church.
  • Trinity Sunday, May 23: the Sunday after Pentecost, honoring Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • Corpus Christi, May 27: a Catholic feast of the Eucharist, a public holiday in parts of Germany, Austria, Poland and Brazil.
  • All Saints’ Day, November 1: honors all the saints, followed by All Souls’ Day on November 2.

Advent and Christmas 2027

Advent 2027 begins on Sunday, November 28, four Sundays before Christmas, and marks the start of a new church year. Christmas Eve is a Friday and Christmas Day a Saturday in 2027. Many Orthodox churches that still use the Julian calendar celebrate Christmas on January 7. The 12 days of Christmas run to Epiphany on January 6, 2028. An Advent and Christmas countdown calendar is a fun way for children to count down the days.

How the Christian calendar 2027 is organized

The Christian calendar 2027 has fixed feasts, such as Christmas and All Saints’ Day, that fall on the same date every year, and movable feasts, such as Ash Wednesday, Ascension and Pentecost, that depend on the date of Easter. The church year is divided into seasons: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter and Ordinary Time. Wikipedia’s liturgical year article explains the seasons and their colors.

Using the Christian holidays 2027 calendar at church and school

Church offices can print the year at a glance for notice boards and service planning, and mark extra events such as baptisms, confirmations and harvest festival. Sunday school teachers can follow the seasons with a craft for each one: palm crosses for Palm Sunday, an empty-tomb garden for Easter, a flame craft for Pentecost and an Advent wreath in late November. At home, a printed calendar on the fridge helps children see how Lent leads to Easter and Advent leads to Christmas.

The calendar maker below opens with the Christian holidays 2027 already marked. Switch between a year at a glance, one page per month or a single month; add your country’s public holidays on top, turn on moon phases, add your own church events, and download a free PDF for US Letter, A4 or A5.
