The story of Diwali

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most important festivals of the year for many Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. Families clean and decorate their homes, light rows of small oil lamps called diyas and draw colorful patterns called rangoli on the floor near the door.

Stories differ by region. In many parts of India, Diwali remembers the return of Prince Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, when the people lit lamps to welcome him. Elsewhere it honors Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good fortune. Sikhs mark the same time of year with Bandi Chhor Divas, and Jains remember the day Mahavira reached liberation.

Wikipedia’s Diwali article describes how the festival is celebrated by different communities.

What is in the Diwali activity pack?

Every activity uses the same list of 24 Diwali words, so children meet each word several times in different ways. The list is the heart of these Diwali worksheets: the word search hides it, the scramble mixes it up, the bingo calls it out and the writing prompt asks children to use it.

Diwali word search: three levels

The word search comes in easy, medium and hard grids, with 10, 14 and 18 words from the list.

The longest Diwali words are fireworks, celebrate and sparklers with 9 letters, and the shortest word is joy with 3.
