The story of Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, a time of fasting, prayer, reflection and charity for Muslims around the world. Because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon, Ramadan begins about ten or eleven days earlier each year, and it starts and ends with the sighting of the new crescent moon.

Most healthy adults and older children fast from dawn to sunset, and young children usually fast only for part of the day or not at all. Families eat suhoor before dawn and break the fast at sunset with iftar, often starting with dates. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a festival of prayers, new clothes, sweets, gifts and visits to family and friends.

Wikipedia’s Ramadan article describes the month, the fast and how it is observed around the world.
