Find and Count Worksheets: 18 Free Counting Pages for Kids

Find and count worksheets: a kindergarten boy counting little animals on a worksheet with number blocks beside him

These find and count worksheets turn counting practice into a picture hunt. Each page has a busy scene and a short checklist: find every picture on the list, count how many there are and write the number in the box. There are six themes with three levels each (counts up to 5, 10 and 20), plus an answer key for every page. The find and count worksheets help children practise counting the objects in a picture.

Find and count worksheets: Count-to-10 farm page with four kinds of animals and crops to find, count and write in the boxes
A count-to-10 page from the farm pack: find each picture in the checklist, count how many there are and write the number in the box.

Quick answer: choose a theme and a level, print the PDF and give the child a pencil. Page 1 counts up to 5, page 2 up to 10 and page 3 up to 20. The last three pages show every picture circled with the right number.

Find and count worksheets (PDF)

Each pack is a six-page PDF: three counting pages, then three answer pages. Click a picture to open the PDF; the preview shows the count-to-10 page.

Which counting level should you print?

The three pages in every pack follow the number range a child is working on. The numbers below come from the pages in these packs.

Level Pictures on the page Things to find How many of each Good for
Count to 5 about 30 3 kinds 1 to 5 Preschool and early kindergarten
Count to 10 about 50 4 kinds 3 to 10 Kindergarten
Count to 20 about 96 4 kinds 6 to 20 Kindergarten to first grade, and anyone who wants a bigger count

How to use the find and count worksheets

  1. Choose the number range. Start with the page a child can finish with a little effort, not one that causes tears.
  2. Name each picture. Say the checklist words together, for example “crabs” or “pencils”.
  3. Touch and count. Children point to each picture as they say the numbers, then circle it so they do not count it twice.
  4. Write the number. The box beside each picture is for the final count.
  5. Check with the answer page. Every picture is circled and the correct number is printed.

Counting skills these pages practice

  • One-to-one counting: touching each object once while saying one number word.
  • Keeping track: circling items so nothing is counted twice or missed.
  • Writing numerals: copying the final count into the box.
  • Comparing: after a page, asking which picture there was more of and which there was less of.

These are warm-up skills for early math, and children move at different speeds. If a child counts to 20 by rote but loses track in a crowded picture, that is normal and a good reason to repeat the 10-count page.

Teaching ideas for kindergarten

Level Activity What to ask
Count to 5 Count aloud together, finger by finger. Are there more pigs or more cows?
Count to 10 Circle each picture, then write the number. How many are there in all if you add two pictures?
Count to 20 Group the circled pictures in fives. How many groups of five did you make?

Using the pages in a math center

  • Slide a page into a plastic sleeve and use a dry-erase marker so one pack serves many children.
  • Pair a find and count page with number cards, so children place the right card next to each picture.
  • Ask early finishers to make up a number sentence from two of their counts.
  • Send a pack home for the weekend, and ask a family member to check the answers with the key.

A simple week of counting practice

Five short sessions beat one long one. This plan uses one pack from the page and takes about ten minutes a day.

Day Page to print Focus
Monday Count to 5 page Name and count each picture together.
Tuesday Count to 5 page, a new theme Count alone, then check with the answer page.
Wednesday Count to 10 page Circle each picture before writing the number.
Thursday Count to 10 page, a new theme Compare two counts: which is more?
Friday Count to 20 page Group the circled pictures in fives and tens.

Children who find a level easy can move up a day early, and those who need more time can repeat a page with a different theme. The pictures change but the skill stays the same.

Tips for parents

Sit beside your child for the first page, point to each picture on the checklist and talk about what you see. For the second page, step back and let them lead. Praise careful counting, not speed, and check the answer page together without making a fuss if a number is wrong. A miscount is a chance to count again, slowly, while pointing at each circled picture.

How these pages are made

Each page is generated by a program: it chooses the targets for the checklist, fixes how many of each there will be, then scatters those pictures among many others so that nothing overlaps. The answer page is drawn from the same data, so the circles and totals always match the puzzle.

The pictures are Noto Emoji artwork from Google, used under the Apache License 2.0; the project is on GitHub. A credit line is printed at the bottom of every page.

Use the find and count worksheets with small counters or buttons for children who like to touch as they count.
