Diwali Party Games: 20 Ideas for Family, Kids and Office (2026)

The best Diwali party games are ones that grandparents, teenagers and toddlers can play at the same time: Diwali tambola, a rangoli contest, a diya-decorating table and a short quiz. Below are 20 games for family gatherings, card parties, children and the office, with how to play each one, a two-hour party plan and prize ideas. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so many get-togethers will be on the weekends before it.

1. The main event: how to run Diwali tambola

Tambola, also called housie, is the Indian name for 90-ball bingo, and it is the easiest of all Diwali party games for a big group because everyone plays at once. Each ticket has three rows and nine columns, with 15 numbers between 1 and 90.

  1. Print tickets from our Diwali tambola page: one or two per player, with a pen each.
  2. Agree the prizes before the first call. A common set is early five (the first five numbers marked), top line, middle line, bottom line and full house.
  3. Pick a caller: a teenager or a grandparent who enjoys the microphone. The online caller on the same page draws the numbers and keeps the board.
  4. Check every claim against the called numbers before handing over a prize. A false claim (a “bogey”) sends the player out for that prize.

A full game takes 25 to 35 minutes. Relatives in other cities can join on their phones, and the play bingo online page works the same way for a plain number game.

Tambola with young children: give each child a partner who can read numbers, or swap numbers for Diwali pictures (diya, lantern, ladoo) and call the pictures instead. Make each prize small and frequent so that little ones win something in the first ten minutes.

How long does Diwali tambola take? Prize times from a simulation

Hosts often ask when each tambola prize will arrive, so we simulated it. For each group size we dealt 2,500 sets of random tickets with the standard layout (three rows and nine columns, five numbers in every row, and one to three numbers in each column) and called the numbers 1 to 90 in random order. The table shows the median number of calls until the first early five, the first complete line and the first full house, with the middle half of games in brackets:

Group Calls to “early five” Calls to the first line Calls to full house Minutes at 20 seconds a call
10 players, 1 ticket each 15 (13 to 18) 44 (37 to 50) 77 (73 to 80) 5, 15, 26
20 players, 1 ticket each 13 (11 to 15) 39 (33 to 44) 74 (70 to 77) 4, 13, 25
40 players, 1 ticket each 12 (10 to 13) 34 (29 to 39) 71 (67 to 74) 4, 11, 24
20 players, 2 tickets each 12 (10 to 13) 34 (29 to 39) 71 (67 to 74) 4, 11, 24

Three things stand out. First, every prize comes sooner with more tickets in play, but the full house moves only from about 77 calls with 10 tickets to about 71 with 40, so a big party does not shorten the game much. Second, the early five comes after about 12 to 15 calls, which is a quick first win after four or five minutes. Third, the first line needs about 34 to 44 calls, so there are long gaps between prizes when a game of Diwali tambola has five of them.

At 20 seconds a call, which allows time to read the number, find it and handle a claim, a full game for 20 players lasts about 25 minutes, in line with the 25 to 35 minutes mentioned above. Speed up the caller to 10 seconds if the group is large and the numbers are on a screen. Our Diwali tambola page has tickets and an online caller, and the how to play tambola guide explains the ticket layout.

Easy Diwali games for family gatherings

These Diwali party games need no prior knowledge, so guests from different regions and generations can join in straight away.

2. Rangoli contest

Give each team a 1-meter (3-foot) square of floor (mark it with masking tape), a set of colors and 30 minutes. Judge on color, neatness and how well the design fills the square. Use chalk outlines for children and freehand for adults. A tray of flower petals makes a lovely, easy-to-sweep alternative to powder.

Judging point What to look for Marks
Color Bright, balanced colors with clean edges 5
Neatness No gaps or smudges; powder stays inside the lines 5
Design Symmetry and a clear center, such as a diya or lotus 5
Teamwork Every member added part of the design 5

3. Diya decorating

Set out plain clay diyas, paints, sequins and glue on a covered table as guests arrive. Everyone takes their diya home, and the family votes for one to light the puja thali. It keeps early arrivals busy while you finish cooking.

4. Diwali quiz

Play the online Diwali quiz on a TV or phones in teams that mix ages. For a full quiz night, take a round or two from our 60 Diwali quiz questions with answers, which run from easy questions for young children to a harder family final.

5. Mithai tasting blindfold

Cut five sweets into small pieces: ladoo, barfi, jalebi, peda and a gulab jamun. Blindfolded players guess each one from a single bite. Ask about nut and milk allergies before you start, and keep a plain option for anyone who cannot join.

6. Diwali antakshari

Antakshari means “the game of the ending letter”: each team sings a song that starts with the consonant on which the last team’s song ended. For Diwali, allow only festive or film songs about lights, family and celebration. Teams that cannot find a song in 30 seconds lose a point. Our Bollywood songs quiz makes a good warm-up.

7. Musical pass the parcel

Wrap a small gift in several layers, with a slip between each layer: “name three Diwali sweets”, “do your best Diwali dance move”, “share a Diwali memory”. Whoever unwraps a layer when the music stops does the task.

8. Diwali dumb charades

Teams act out Hindi film titles or Diwali actions (lighting a diya, drawing rangoli, bursting a cracker) without speaking. Use our list of dumb charades movie names for ready-made slips.

Card games played for points, not money

Card parties are a Diwali tradition in many homes. Playing for points or chocolate coins keeps these games friendly for every age at the table.

9. Rummy for points

Play standard rummy and keep a running score on a sheet. The lowest total after five rounds wins a prize. Seat a confident player next to anyone learning, and let beginners play with their cards face up for the first round.

10. Teen patti with chocolate coins

Give every player the same number of chocolate coins. When they run out, they become the dealer. Children love it, and nobody loses real money.

11. Uno, Diwali edition

Every time someone plays a +4, they share a Diwali memory or name a Diwali sweet before the next player goes. Anyone who forgets has to draw two extra cards, which keeps everyone listening.

Diwali games for kids in their own corner

Give children their own corner so these Diwali party games do not collide with the adults’ tambola. For craft and learning ideas, see our guide to Diwali activities for kids.

12. Diwali word search and puzzles

Print our Diwali worksheets for a quiet table: word search, scramble, bingo and a card to color.

13. Lantern hunt

Hide paper lanterns around the house, each with a clue to the next. The last one holds a small bag of sweets to share.

14. Picture bingo

For children who cannot read yet, our picture bingo has themes they can play on their own while the adults play tambola.

15. Diya and spoon relay

Each runner carries an unlit clay diya on a spoon to a line and back. Dropped diyas go back to the start. Use plastic diyas for under-5s.

16. Color the rangoli

Draw a large rangoli outline on paper and let children color it together, or print a picture from the color by number maker in festive colors.

Diwali office games that suit any team

Diwali office games and other Diwali party games for work should be short, need no special knowledge and work for colleagues who do not celebrate the festival.

17. Desk decoration contest

Teams decorate a desk or bay with lights, torans and rangoli on paper. Judge at lunchtime on creativity rather than spending, and set a small shared budget so every team starts equal.

18. Diwali Pictionary

Draw festival words on a whiteboard or a shared screen: diya, lantern, rangoli, sweets box, fireworks. Add general words from our Pictionary word list for colleagues new to Diwali.

19. Ethnic wear day

Invite everyone to wear festive clothes, with prizes by category (most colorful, best accessories, best team look) rather than one winner.

20. Two truths and a Diwali tradition

Each colleague shares three statements about how their family celebrates a festival; one is invented. It works for hybrid teams on a video call too.

Diwali party ideas: a countdown from two weeks to the day

The best Diwali party ideas fail when preparation is left to the last evening. Printing, buying and testing take only a few minutes each, but they pile up if they all fall on the same day. This countdown spreads them out:

When What to do Result
Two weeks before Choose three or four games from the list, set the date and count guests Guest list and games list
One week before Print tambola tickets (20% extra), quiz questions and prize slips; buy prizes and sweets Tickets, slips, prizes
Three days before Order or collect diyas, rangoli colors or petals, and masking tape; check the speaker Craft and rangoli kit
The day before Pack one game kit box, wrap the pass-the-parcel layers and test the online caller One box, ready to go
On the day Clear floor space, set out diyas and the sweets table, and give each game a helper Helpers named

The countdown suits any of the games in this guide. If you are hosting an office celebration, move each step forward by a few days, because colleagues need notice and shared budgets need approval.

Planning a two-hour Diwali party

Alternate busy Diwali party games with sitting-down ones so energy lasts through dinner.

Two-hour plan of Diwali party games: diya decorating, tambola, rangoli judging and quiz, then dinner and antakshari
Time Activity
0:00 to 0:30 Welcome, sweets and diya decorating for early arrivals
0:30 to 1:00 Diwali tambola with five prizes
1:00 to 1:30 Rangoli contest judging, then the Diwali quiz
1:30 to 2:00 Dinner and antakshari; prizes at the end

A 60-minute version for a small gathering

Short on time, or hosting six to ten people after dinner? Cut the plan to three games: 10 minutes of mithai tasting, 25 minutes of tambola with three prizes (early five, one line, full house) and 20 minutes of antakshari, with 5 minutes to hand out prizes. Skip the rangoli contest, which needs floor space and time to judge.

What you need in the party kit

  • Printed tambola tickets, pens and a phone or laptop for the online caller
  • Rangoli colors or flower petals, masking tape and a broom for clearing up
  • Plain clay diyas, paints, sequins and glue, with newspaper to cover the table
  • A speaker for pass the parcel and antakshari
  • A wrapped parcel with task slips, and a bag of small prizes
  • Printed worksheets and crayons for the children’s corner

Put the kit in one box a day before the party, so every game can start the moment you announce it.

Adapting the games for mixed ages

  • Grandparents: seat them for tambola, the quiz and antakshari, and invite them to judge the rangoli contest.
  • Toddlers: picture bingo and a plastic diya relay, with a helper for each team.
  • Teenagers: give them jobs (tambola caller, quiz host, antakshari scorekeeper). They join in more readily when they have a role.
  • Guests new to Diwali: pair them with a family member in team games and explain the festival in one sentence before the quiz.

Prize ideas

  • Small: decorated diyas, dry-fruit packs, chocolate boxes, scented candles, rangoli colors.
  • Medium: brass or silver-plated puja items, a box of mithai, fairy lights, a small plant.
  • Full house: a gift hamper, a silver coin, a decorative lantern or a dinner set.

For an office, a gift exchange with a fixed spending limit is simpler than buying prizes for every game.

Common mistakes when hosting Diwali party games

  • Starting tambola too late. Once dinner is served, nobody wants to hold a pen. Play it in the first hour.
  • Too few tickets or pens. Print 20% more than your guest count.
  • Games that need insider knowledge. A hard quiz leaves guests from other regions out; keep it light.
  • Lit diyas near game areas. Keep flames and crackers well away from relays and the children’s corner.
  • Unclear prizes. Announce the prizes before each game to avoid arguments later.

Safety and inclusion

Keep games that involve diyas and candles for older children with an adult nearby, and use unlit or LED diyas for relays. Diwali parties often mix faiths and regions, so mention different traditions, such as Lakshmi Puja, the Sikh Bandi Chhor Divas and Kali Puja in Bengal, and choose tambola and the rangoli contest as the main events because they need no prior knowledge. For quick extra rounds at a kitty party, see our one-minute games for kitty parties.
