What is Bhai Dooj?

Bhai Dooj is a festival of brothers and sisters celebrated on the second day (dwitiya) of the bright half of Kartik, at the end of Diwali. The sister puts a tilak on her brother’s forehead, does aarti and prays for his long life, and the brother gives her a gift and promises to support her. According to the best-known story, Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day and blessed every brother who receives a tilak from his sister, which is why the day is also called Yama Dwitiya.
