5th grade math questions by standard
Searching for 5th grade math questions or fifth grade math problems usually means finding practice for one standard at a time. This table shows which skill each group of problems practices:
| Skill in this set | Common Core standard | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Decimals | 5.NBT.A.3, 5.NBT.B.7 | Read, compare and round decimals; add, subtract, multiply and divide to hundredths |
| Whole numbers | 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6 | Multiply multi-digit numbers; divide by two-digit divisors |
| Fractions | 5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.7 | Add and subtract with unlike denominators; multiply; divide unit fractions and whole numbers |
| Order of operations | 5.OA.A.1 | Evaluate expressions with parentheses |
| Volume | 5.MD.C.5 | Find volume with length times width times height |
| Units | 5.MD.A.1 | Convert units within a system |
| Coordinate plane | 5.G.A.1 | Graph points in the first quadrant |
Step-by-step solutions to five of the problems
If a problem was hard, compare your method with these worked solutions. There is usually more than one correct method, so the answer matters most:
| Problem | Method | Steps |
|---|---|---|
| 348 × 27 | Partial products | 348 × 20 = 6,960 and 348 × 7 = 2,436, so 6,960 + 2,436 = 9,396 |
| 2/3 + 1/4 | Common denominator | 2/3 = 8/12 and 1/4 = 3/12, so 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12 |
| 4.5 ÷ 0.9 | Scale both numbers | Multiply both by 10: 45 ÷ 9 = 5 |
| 1,248 ÷ 24 | Long division | 24 goes into 124 five times (120), remainder 4; bring down 8; 48 ÷ 24 = 2; so 52 |
| 3/4 × 2/5 | Multiply across | 3 × 2 = 6 and 4 × 5 = 20, so 6/20 = 3/10 |
Common mistakes in 5th grade math problems
Most wrong answers come from a few habits. Watch for these when you check a set of math problems for fifth graders:
| Mistake | Example | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Misaligned decimal points | 3.45 + 2.8 written as 3.45 + 2.80 shifted | Line up the decimal points and add a zero: 3.45 + 2.80 = 6.25 |
| Adding denominators | 2/3 + 1/4 = 3/7 | Find a common denominator and add only the numerators |
| Order of operations left to right | 3 + 4 × 2 = 14 | Multiply first: 3 + 8 = 11 |
| Dividing by a decimal without scaling | 4.5 ÷ 0.9 = 0.5 | Multiply both by 10: 45 ÷ 9 = 5 |
| Volume as an area | Volume of a 5 by 4 by 3 box as 5 × 4 | Multiply all three edges: 60 cubic cm |
How to solve the 5th grade word problems
Fifth grade word problems usually have two steps, and a short routine makes them easier. Read the problem twice, underline the question, and draw a quick picture or a bar model. Write the number sentence before you calculate, and finish by asking whether the answer makes sense.
Take the baker problem above: 6 batches at 3/4 cup each means 6 × 3/4 = 18/4, which is 4 1/2 cups. The answer is more than 4 cups and less than 5, which fits a bit under one cup per batch times 6. Estimating first, as in this check, catches most slips with fractions and decimals.
