- Monday: decimals to thousandths: read, compare and round them on a place value chart.
- Tuesday: adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
- Wednesday: long division with 2-digit divisors, estimating the answer first.
- Thursday: multi-digit multiplication and the order of operations.
- Friday: volume of rectangular prisms or plotting points on the coordinate plane.
Twenty to twenty-five minutes a day keeps fifth graders on track without burning them out.
5th grade math: the topics that need extra practice
Two topics trip up most fifth graders: fractions with unlike denominators and long division with 2-digit divisors. For fractions, draw both fractions on a fraction wall before finding a common denominator, so the idea of equal-sized pieces makes sense. For division, round the divisor to estimate each step, then adjust. Expressions with brackets also appear this year, and our order of operations worksheets follow the same rules explained in the order of operations article on Wikipedia. Short daily practice with worked answer keys works better than long weekend sessions.
Common 5th grade mistakes and quick fixes
- Adding denominators: 1/2 + 1/3 is not 2/5. Rename both as sixths first: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
- Misaligned decimals: writing 4.5 + 2.35 with the last digits lined up gives the wrong answer. Line up the decimal points and write 4.50.
- Forgetting a zero in the quotient: in 1,224 ÷ 12 the answer is 102, not 12. If a divisor does not go in, write 0 and bring down the next digit.
- Volume vs area: volume needs three measurements and cubic units, such as 4 × 3 × 2 = 24 cubic units.
When the same mistake appears twice on a page, stop and fix that one idea before printing the next worksheet.
Tips for using 5th grade math worksheets at home
- Line up the decimal points before adding or subtracting decimals, and write a zero in empty places.
- Estimate every long division first. It tells you how many digits the answer will have.
- For unlike denominators, find a common denominator with a fraction wall before using multiples.
- Use the place value chart to show why multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left.
Fifth grade math worksheets for every kind of learner
By fifth grade the gap between children can be wide. Grade 5 math worksheets that use place value charts and fraction walls help children who need to see the idea, while plain problem sets build speed for those who already understand it.
- Visual learners: decimal grids, fraction walls and box diagrams for volume come before the written method.
- Quick finishers: try longer division problems or multi-step word problems from the fifth grade math worksheets topics.
- Children who need more time: use Customize to print fewer problems; the grade 5 math worksheets keep a matching answer key.
Teachers can print a different version of the same page for each group, and all the math worksheets for 5th graders on this page print on US Letter or A4 paper.
How to choose the right worksheets this year
Fifth graders often have gaps from earlier years, so start with a short check: one multi-digit multiplication page and one fractions page. If both go well, move straight to decimals and division with 2-digit divisors. If multiplication facts are slow, add a few minutes of times tables practice each day before the harder pages.
Schools usually begin the year with place value, powers of ten and decimals, move on to multiplication and division, and spend the winter on fractions. Volume, the coordinate plane and unit conversions often come last. The topic cards above follow the same order, so you can stay one step ahead of class or review what was taught that week.
Older children can check their own work with the answer key and circle any mistakes. Talking through one wrong answer is worth more than finishing another page.

What math do 5th graders learn?
Fifth graders work with decimals to thousandths, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, multiply fractions, divide by two-digit numbers, use the order of operations, convert units, find volume and plot points on a coordinate plane.
Is long division with 2-digit divisors a 5th grade skill?
Yes. Fifth graders divide up to four-digit dividends by two-digit divisors. Our long division worksheets include keys that show every step.
Are these 5th grade math worksheets free?
Yes. There is no charge and no account; print what your child or class needs.
Do the 5th grade math worksheets have answer keys?
Yes. The answer key is the last page of each PDF.
What is the hardest part of 5th grade math?
Many children find fractions with unlike denominators and long division with two-digit divisors the hardest. Short, regular practice with worked answer keys helps most.
Do the grade 5 math worksheets include decimals?
Yes, from reading decimals to multiplying them. Use a place value chart with decimals so tenths, hundredths and thousandths are visible, and practice lining up decimal points.
Do the 5th grade worksheets come in A4 size?

How can I get more fifth grade math worksheets?
Press Customize on any worksheet for new numbers, or print up to five different versions at once.
67 free 5th grade math worksheets, by topic
This page links 67 free 5th grade math worksheets as PDFs for US Letter and A4 with answer keys. Decimals (12) and long division (9) lead, followed by graphing (9), addition and subtraction (8 each) and the order of operations (6). This table shows every topic:
| Math topic | Free worksheets on this page |
|---|---|
| Decimals | 12 |
| Long division | 9 |
| Graphing | 9 |
| Addition | 8 |
| Subtraction | 8 |
| Order of operations | 6 |

Fifth grade has fewer separate worksheet sets than third or fourth grade on this site, because the standards focus on a few large ideas: decimals, fractions and the multi-digit algorithms. For extra practice, the topic hubs linked at the bottom of this page list more sheets, and Customize makes unlimited new ones.
Why 5th grade math is the year the multi-digit methods are finished
Standard 5.NBT.B.5 expects fifth graders to multiply multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm, and 5.NBT.B.6 asks them to divide up to four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors. The number of partial products and steps grows quickly:
| Fifth grade multiplication | Partial products to add | Largest possible product |
|---|---|---|
| 2-digit × 2-digit | 4 | 9,801 |
| 3-digit × 2-digit | 6 | 98,901 |
| 4-digit × 2-digit | 8 | 989,901 |
| 3-digit × 3-digit | 9 | 998,001 |
A 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication has 6 partial products and can reach a five-digit answer, so careful place value is as important as knowing the facts. Practice the algorithm slowly, one problem at a time, with the answer key checking each product.
5th grade math: free worksheets for the skills that need the most practice
Parents who type 5th grade math, 5th math worksheets or math for 5th graders usually mean the same thing: the topics their child finds hard. In fifth grade that is most often long division, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, and decimals. Math worksheets grade 5 and math 5th grade worksheets for those three skills are linked above. Start with the one the class is working on, and add a second skill only when the first feels easy.
