What 6th graders learn in math

The Common Core grade 6 math standards group the year into five domains. The table shows each one and where to practice it:

Domain What students do Practice here
Ratios and proportional relationships (6.RP) Understand ratios, unit rates and percent as a rate per 100 Ratios and proportions
The number system (6.NS) Divide fractions by fractions, find the GCF and LCM, and work with negative numbers and the coordinate plane Integers, Coordinate plane, Number line
Expressions and equations (6.EE) Use exponents, write and evaluate expressions, and solve one-step equations Order of operations, One-step equations
Geometry (6.G) Find the area of triangles and polygons and the volume of prisms Area calculator, Volume calculator
Statistics and probability (6.SP) Describe data with the mean, median and mode and show it in dot plots and histograms Mean, median and mode calculator

Ratios and rates: equivalent ratios and unit rates

A ratio compares two quantities, such as 3 : 4. Multiplying both numbers by the same factor gives an equivalent ratio, which is the idea behind a ratio table. Here are three ratios multiplied by 1 to 6:

Ratio × 1 × 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6
3 : 4 3 : 4 6 : 8 9 : 12 12 : 16 15 : 20 18 : 24
5 : 6 5 : 6 10 : 12 15 : 18 20 : 24 25 : 30 30 : 36
2 : 7 2 : 7 4 : 14 6 : 21 8 : 28 10 : 35 12 : 42

A unit rate compares a quantity to one unit of another. Divide the first quantity by the second to find it:

Situation Unit rate
Walking 6 miles in 2 hours 3 miles per hour
$7.50 for 5 notebooks 1.50 dollars per notebook
240 words in 4 minutes 60 words per minute
360 miles on 12 gallons 30 miles per gallon

Use the ratio calculator to check an answer, and print the ratios and proportions worksheets for more practice.

GCF and LCM: six pairs worked out

The greatest common factor is the largest number that divides both numbers, and the least common multiple is the smallest number that both divide into. For any two numbers, GCF × LCM equals their product, which is a handy check:

Numbers Greatest common factor (GCF) Least common multiple (LCM)
12 and 18 6 36
8 and 20 4 40
15 and 25 5 75
14 and 21 7 42
16 and 24 8 48
9 and 12 3 36

For 12 and 18, the GCF is 6 and the LCM is 36, and 6 × 36 = 216 = 12 × 18. The GCF and LCM calculator works out any pair and shows the steps.

Fractions, decimals and percents: a conversion chart

Percent means per hundred, so 3/4 is 75 out of 100, or 75%. To convert a fraction, divide the top by the bottom, then multiply by 100. This chart has ten fractions that come up again and again in 6th grade:

Fraction Decimal Percent
1/2 0.5 50%
1/4 0.25 25%
3/4 0.75 75%
1/5 0.2 20%
2/5 0.4 40%
1/8 0.125 12.5%
3/8 0.375 37.5%
1/3 0.333… 33.3%
2/3 0.667… 66.7%
7/10 0.7 70%

Print the percent worksheets for sheets that start from these conversions, and use the decimal to fraction calculator to turn any decimal into a fraction.

Mean, median and mode: one data set, five answers

Statistics in grade 6 describes the center and the spread of a data set. For the seven numbers 4, 7, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, the answers are:

Measure How to find it Answer
Mean Add all values and divide by 7 (sum = 63) 9
Median Middle value of the ordered list 8
Mode Most common value 7
Range Largest minus smallest 11
Mean absolute deviation Average distance from the mean 2.86

The mean, median and mode calculator checks your work, and the graphing worksheets turns data into a bar or picture graph.

Negative numbers and the coordinate plane

Grade 6 is where negative numbers become real numbers. Students place integers on a number line, compare them (−5 is less than −2), find absolute value and plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. A good first step is the number line, then the integer sheets for adding and subtracting with signs. Our coordinate plane page has mystery pictures that practice the four quadrants.

Sixth grade math worksheets and grade 6 math worksheets

Families and teachers use many names for the same collection: sixth grade math worksheets, grade 6 math worksheets, math worksheets for 6th graders and printable 6th grade math worksheets. All of them lead to the free PDFs on this page. Every sheet is a PDF for US Letter or A4, and 6th grade math worksheets with answers are what you get: each file ends with an answer key, so students can check their own work.

For 6th grade math practice that goes beyond a single sheet, use the Customize button to build a new set of problems for the same skill, or use the free calculators listed below. Reviewing 6th grade math in short sessions, one skill at a time, works better than long catch-up sessions before a test.

A weekly plan for 6th grade math

A common guideline is about 10 minutes of homework per grade level each night, or about an hour in 6th grade for all subjects, so the blocks below are part of the evening, not on top of it:

Day Focus Suggested block
Monday Ratios and rates: ratio and proportion worksheets 20 min
Tuesday Integers or the coordinate plane 20 min
Wednesday Order of operations or equations 20 min
Thursday Percents, fractions and decimals 20 min
Weekly total Four short sessions, with one free day 80 min

Free math calculators for 6th graders

A calculator is a good way to check homework, not to replace it. These free calculators match 6th grade topics and show the working:

Calculator Use it to
Ratio calculator Simplify ratios and solve for a missing value
GCF and LCM calculator Find factors and multiples
Fraction calculator Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions
Percentage calculator Find a percent of a number or a percent change
Mean, median and mode calculator Describe a data set
Area calculator Area and perimeter of six shapes
Volume calculator Volume of six 3D shapes

Common mistakes in 6th grade math, and how to fix them

Most errors in grade 6 come from a handful of habits. Knowing them helps a parent or teacher spot the problem quickly:

Mistake Example Fix
Flipping the wrong fraction when dividing 1/2 ÷ 1/4 written as 2/1 × 1/4 = 1/2 Keep the first fraction, flip the second: 1/2 × 4/1 = 2
Ordering negative numbers by size of the digit Thinking −7 is greater than −2 Use a number line: numbers further left are smaller, so −7 < −2
Writing a percent as the wrong decimal 5% written as 0.5 Divide by 100: 5% = 0.05
Ignoring the order in a ratio 3 boys to 4 girls written 4 : 3 Write the quantities in the order the words give them: 3 : 4
Doing operations left to right only 2 + 3 × 4 = 20 Multiply first: 2 + 12 = 14
Mixing up the mean and the median Calling the middle value the mean Mean = total ÷ number of values; median = the middle value of the ordered list

A 6th grade math skills checklist

Use this checklist at the start and end of the year. A child who can tick every line is ready for 7th grade:

  • Write a ratio in three ways (3 to 4, 3 : 4, 3/4) and find an equivalent ratio.
  • Find a unit rate, such as miles per hour or price per item.
  • Divide a fraction by a fraction and explain why it works.
  • Find the GCF and LCM of two numbers up to 100.
  • Place positive and negative numbers on a number line and find their absolute value.
  • Plot points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
  • Evaluate expressions with exponents and use the order of operations.
  • Solve one-step equations such as x + 7 = 15 and 4x = 36.
  • Find the area of a triangle and the volume of a rectangular prism.
  • Find the mean, median, mode and range of a data set.

How to use these worksheets at home or in class

Start with a skill the class is working on, print one worksheet, and let the student work without help for the first half. Then check together with the answer key and look for a pattern in the mistakes, rather than only counting the correct answers. If the same kind of error appears three times, return to a worked example or a calculator, then print a fresh set from the generator.

Keep sessions short. For most students in grade 6, twenty focused minutes beat an hour of tired work. Finish with one or two problems that the student chooses, which keeps the session positive and shows what they feel confident about.
