What is Chhath Puja?

Chhath Puja is a festival of worship of Surya, the Sun God, and Chhathi Maiya, who is believed to protect children. It is celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, in the Terai region of Nepal, and by families from these places all over the world. Over four days, devotees take a holy bath, keep a long fast and stand in a river or pond to offer arghya (water and offerings) to the setting sun and then to the rising sun.
